Barret Paideia Academy “ Native American Indians” 5 th Grade

Unit Plan Summary: Students understand that trade connected the Africans, Europeans, and Native Americans. Students locate geographic features and places on a map of the United States.

Essential Question Why am I here?

Unit Questions Can students identify and compare historic Native American Indian groups of the West, Southwest, Northwest, Arctic, Great Plains, and Eastern Woodlands regions at the beginning of European exploration? Can students locate major landforms and geographic features, places, and bodies of water on a map of the United States? Content Questions How were the Native American nations alike/different? What was life like for Native American nations in the 1600’s? What are the various major landforms and geographical features of the United States? What specific landforms are present around a specific Native American nation? How did the landforms in a region affect the Native American nation?

Benefits of Using Project Approaches, Ongoing Assessment, and CFQs in My Unit Students research about a Native American Nation. Their project has a real audience—History students from a local college. Students collaborate with peers to collect information about a Native American Nation. They learn writing and thinking skills while they are working on the project. Throughout the project they give and receive feedback on their work.

By Using Project Approaches, Ongoing Assessment, and CFQs My Students Will:  Experience writing and creating for a real audience and use technology to enhance their learning  Gain self-assessment and self-direction skills that they will use and build on all year long

Gauging Student Needs Assessment I will use my Essential and Unit Questions to: Find out what students think Native American Nations and the regions of North America Gather information on higher-order thinking and 21 st century skills: By answering how good writers write, students will show their metacognitive awareness of writing strategies By taking on different perspectives and predicting their needs, students will anticipate what people want to know about the school

Gauging Student Needs Assessment What I will learn from the assessment What my students already know about the different landforms in North America Prior Knowledge of Native American Nations What my students will gain from the assessment Clarification of types of landforms Misconceptions of Native Americans

My Goals Learn about different kinds of technology that will motivate my students Find ways to get my students to do more higher-order thinking Learn some strategies for helping students do projects from other teachers

Let’s Have Some FUN!!
