Urine Collection

General instructions Urine specimens are generally collected from school-age children and non-pregnant women aged 15-49 years. Survey staff should make sure that all supplies are available for collection of urine samples and verify that the tubes are labeled properly and accurately before specimen collection.

Urine collection process Give a sterile pre-labelled urine collection cup to the subject and explain the following before the urine collection: First, hands should be washed with soap and water. The collection cup should not be opened until just before urinating. The cap should be turned up while urinating, and then immediately recap the filled container tightly. It is most important that the inside of the container and the cap not be touched or come into contact with any parts of the body, clothing, or external surfaces. Exposure to air should be minimized.

Urine collection process Collect the capped specimen from the subject and make sure that the cap is secured tightly. With a disposable pipette, transfer at least 1.5 mL urine sample to each of the 2 pre-labelled cryovials. Make certain not to overfill (no more than 1.8 mL), and screw caps on tightly. Put the 2 cryovials into the cool box. Discard the pipette into the biohazard bag. Ask the subject to dispose of the remaining urine and have him/her place the cup into the biohazard bag.
