Bible Story-time Would We Lie to You?

Genesis 37 Joseph and his Insanely Jealous ten Big Brothers I need 11 volunteers PLEASE! Plus one Jacob (father of them all)

Our story starts out with Joseph and his brothers. Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers 3 Now Jacob, his father loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made an ornate robe for him. 4 When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him. But to make things worse, Joseph began having dreams about him and his brothers and began sharing these dreams with his family. The dreams seemed to indicate that Joseph would one day rule over all of his brothers. And his big brothers hated him all the more for it.

Joseph’s Brothers go on a trip… Joseph got a break from their jealousy when their father sent the older brothers to tend his sheep near Shechem (a far away area) But one day Jacob sent Joseph to check on them. This was not good news for Joseph. His brothers saw him a long way off. Before he reached them, they made plans to kill him!

Genesis 37:19-20 “‘Here comes that dreamer!’ they said to one another. ‘Come. Let’s kill him. Let’s say that a wild animal ate him up. Then we’ll see whether his dreams will come true.’” But one of Joseph’s brothers named Reuben did not want to kill his brother: so he made a plan to try and save him. He suggested that instead of killing Joseph, the brothers should instead throw him down a nearby well. Reuben planned to go back later and rescue Joseph and send him back to their father.

Genesis 37:19-20 “‘Here comes that dreamer!’ they said to one another. ‘Come. Let’s kill him. Let’s throw him into one of these empty wells. Let’s say that a wild animal ate him up. Then we’ll see whether his dreams will come true.’” The other brothers agreed with Reuben’s plan, so they stripped Joseph of his robe and threw him down into the empty well. And then for good measure they killed a goat and dipped Joseph’s special coat in the blood, so they could convince Jacob that Joseph had been killed.

Genesis 37:19-20 But later on, when Reuben was gone, checking on the sheep, the brothers saw a caravan of traders heading to Egypt and decided to sell their brother Joseph to the traders to make a little extra cash. (After all, they will never see him again either way) When Reuben came back to get Joseph out of the well, he was gone. Reuben was very sad for his father Jacob, who had lost his most loved son.

The Bible says that Jacob wept for many days, and none of the other brothers could comfort him. In fact, Jacob said that he would mourn for Joseph until he died himself. If the brothers were hoping that getting Joseph out of the picture with their lies would bring more attention to them, they quickly learned the opposite had happened
