Homonyms, Homographs, Homophones. Brittany Flowers

Content Area: English/ Language Arts Grade Level: 5th Summary: The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is to have students understand homonyms, homographs, and homophones. They will be able to recognize each and distinguish between them. Learning Objective: TSW understand homonyms, homographs, and homophones with 100% accuracy. Content Standard: L. 5. 5 Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings. L. 5. 2 Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. Accomplishment: L. 5. 5c Use the relationship between particular words (e.g., synonyms, antonyms, homographs) to better understand each of the words. L. 5. 2e Spell grade-appropriate words correctly, consulting references as needed.

Introductory Homonyms: words that have the same spelling and same pronunciation, but different meanings. Homographs: Words that have the same spelling, but different pronunciations and meaning. Homophones: words that have the same pronunciation, but different spelling and different meanings.

Homonym Example I hope you are not lying _(a)_ to me. (a) telling a lie My books are lying _(b)_ on the table. (b) being in a horizontal position

Homograph Example The wind _(a)_ is blowing hard. (a) moving air (rhymes with pinned) I have to wind _(b)_ my clock. (b) turn the stem (rhymes with find)

Homophone Example Please try not to (waste, waist) paper. waste- use or expend carelessly. waist- the part of the human body below the ribs and above the hips.

Homophone Example I (sent, scent, cent) a letter to my aunt in Vietnam. sent- to have conveyed or delivered. scent- a distinctive smell. cent- a coin of this value.
