“Severe Weather” Severe weather exist in many forms: thunderstorms, tornado, hurricanes, and winter weather. Thunderstorms Tornado Hurricanes Winter Weather Click on a link for additional information and tips!!!

Tornado A tornado is a spinning, funnel-shaped column of air accompanied by a thundercloud and moving destructively over a narrow path. April, May, and June are the most active months for tornadoes. Tornadoes can last from just a few seconds to more than an hour! Tornado Facts 1. Most tornadoes have winds of miles per hour, but the biggest tornadoes have winds of miles per hour. 2. About 75 people die each year as a result of tornadoes. 3. About 1200 tornadoes touch down in the United States each year.

Thunderstorms “ A severe thunderstorm is any thunderstorm that has winds of at least 58 miles per hour or hail at least 3/4 of an inch in diameter. Winds in severe thunderstorms may produce damage as extensive as and similar to that of small tornadoes. Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Severe thunderstorms are possible in your area. Severe Thunderstorm Warning: A severe thunderstorm has been spotted. Take cover immediately!”

Winter Weather A Winter Storm Watch forecast predicts Snow, sleet and/or freezing rain A Winter Storm Warning indicate Snow, sleet and/or freezing rain are falling.

Hurricanes Beware of the "eye" of the hurricane. This calm storm center can be deceptive. The hurricane's eye is bordered by winds and rains of maximum force that blow from the opposite direction as the beginning of the storm. A hurricane is a tropical storm with extremely low barometric pressure and winds moving around a center "eye."
