Cook-Wiss Green Committee

Cook-Wiss Green CommitteeMission Statement What is the Green Committee? Mission Statement: We are a group of parents, students, teachers, and community members who are committed to making Cook-Wissahickon more sustainable, environmentally-responsible, and beautiful. We meet monthly at 3:30 pm in Ms. P’s science room. We’d love to see you there - call Cook- Wiss to find out when!

Cook-Wiss Green CommitteeAccomplishments What has the Green Committee accomplished? Raised Beds Our founding year project was installing two 4’ by 8’ raised beds on the Cook-Wissahickon grounds. To do this, we applied for and received grants from The Cook-Wissahickon Home and School ($500); ACCESS ($338 for soil, shovels, gloves, and watering cans); Home Depot (hundreds of seed packs); The Pennsylvania Horticulture Society (soil, garlic, and winter pansies); The Art Museum (fill dirt to even out the land); Green Committee Members (personally donated a wheelbarrow, 2 hoses, garden liner and set-up and maintenance time) So far, our special education classes, autistic classes, and two years of first graders have planted pansies, garlic, and pumpkins.

Cook-Wiss Green CommitteeAccomplishments What has the Green Committee accomplished? Community Design Collaborative Grant We received a grant in May, 2008 from the Community Design Collaborative (CDC) to have landscape architects volunteer design a landscape plan for our school ground. The landscape architect team, from Veridian Landscape Studio, are currently developing plans for Cook, meeting intermittently with our Green Committee Task Force Team to get feedback along the way. The current draft plans are on display in Ms. P’s science room - make sure to stop by and leave your comments!
