What’s Your Worldview? How does it differ from traditional First Nations and Inuit Worldview?

Your Life…  Activity: Draw a diagram to represent your life.  In the diagram indicate the stages of your life  Also please indicate some goals or aspirations you have

Reflection…  Why did you draw the diagram the way you did?  Did someone tell you to draw it this way?  If no one told you to draw it this way how why did it end up the way it did?  ANSWER - It’s your world view!

Contrasting Worldviews  Many of you likely drew a timeline to represent you life  According to a timeline your life has a clear beginning, middle, and end.  For First Nations and Inuit this model does not align with their worldview.  Time is not measured from beginning to end rather it (time) is in constant change but goes nowhere. (Time is cyclical, and always in a state of renewal, like the seasons and moon phases)

What is a worldview?  It is your opinions and beliefs  It is how you perceive, understand, and respond to the world around you.  Ex. A common belief is that smoking is bad for you health vs. some might believe smoking is a gift from the earth to be enjoyed by all

How is a worldview created?  People from the same culture tend to have similar worldviews  It is developed through history,and collective experiences of the people in that culture  Worldview is also heavily based on beliefs associated with origin and spirituality (Thou shall not kill…so you don’t kill right? If it’s your worldview)

Understanding Worldview  Because your own worldview is so ingrained in your life (and you may not even realize it) it make understanding other groups ways of thinking very difficult  The best way to understand another cultures worldview is to experience it
