Fusion Technology Summary Report Mark Tillack For: Jean Paul Allain IEEE-NPSS AdCom Meeting July 13, 2013, San Francisco, California

Summary of Recent Committee Activities The SOFE 25 in San Francisco, California, June 10-14, 2013 was a tremendous success and conducted as a stand-alone meeting (more details in the next few slides). SOFE 26 (2015) co-organized with PPC (Pulsed Power Conference) chaired by Mark Crawford. –SOFE 26 General chair: Jean Paul Allain, Program chair: Mark Tillack –Location: Austin, Texas between May 31 and June 4, –In process of finalizing MOU with Mark Crawford SOFE 26 organizing committee being assembled this Fall

Final report on SOFE 25 San Francisco, CA, June 10-14, 2013 The technical program consisted of over 315 papers in total or about 88% of the projected attendance based on early 2013 estimates. The SOFE-25 short-course focused on Plasma-Material Interactions and was attended by a mix of graduate students, post-docs, industry folks and scientists from national laboratories. In total, 19 participated. The feedback was very positive for both the technical program and short course. The meeting banquet was held after a tour of the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The banquet venue was a local winery and was attended by more than 80% of attendees.

Highlights from the plenary and invited talks: Rem Haange, ITER deputy director-general, opened the meeting with a talk on “ITER Engineering Integration Challenges” that highlighted both advances in fusion technology driven by ITER requirements as well as the technical and organizational challenges of the ITER enterprise. In explaining ITER’s challenges, Haange, recipient of the 2011 IEEE Fusion Technology Award, described ITER as “a highly integrated machine with very strong interfaces between the different components.” Carlos Alejaldre, ITER deputy director-general responsible for safety, discussed lessons learned in the ITER licensing process. He stressed ITER’s significance as the first fusion nuclear facility and called the French government decree authorizing creation of the ITER facility a “historical achievement for fusion development.” Progress report on SOFE 25 San Francisco, CA, June 10-14, 2013

Expecting over 100 papers to be submitted (for the 3 rd time)

2013 Fusion Technology Award Winner: Philip Heitzenroeder In addition to Phil’s many technical achievements, he also served on the FTSC from , as an elected member of the NPSS AdCom, and as General Chair of the 19 th Symposium on Fusion Engineering (SOFE). For his dedication to advancing the engineering and technology of experimental fusion devices in magnet design and manufacturing, and his leadership of the Fusion Technology Committee of the IEEE NPSS

2013 Symposium on Fusion Engineering Best Student Paper Award Winner: Eleanor Grieveson For the paper titled: “Investigation into Irradiation Effects in ODS-Alloys Using Ion Implantation and Micromechanical Testing” Eleanor Grieveson is a Materials Science student in the 3 rd year of studying for her DPhil (PhD) at the University of Oxford. She received her Bachelors at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, receiving a MEng in Materials Science in of the past 4 winners were international.
