A Role Model for Motherhood Hannah, Mother of Samuel I Samuel 1:1 – 2:10

Motherhood “I’m socializing two Homo-sapiens in Judeo-Christian values so they’ll appropriate the eschatological values of utopia. What do you do?”

Hannah: A Role Model A real person with real problems She responded with believing prayer She trusted God to answer She kept her promise to God She honored God with praise

1.She was a real person with real problems, 1:1-8 She was married to a bigamist She was barren, and her husband had taken his second wife because she was barren. 1:2 Her barrenness could be interpreted as God punishing her God had closed her womb, 1:5,6

1.She was a real person with real problems, 1:1-8 The second wife, Peninnah, gave her grief because she was childless.1:7 She became depressed, 1:7-8 Her husband did not understand her, 1:8 She was misunderstood, 1:12-16

2. She responded in believing prayer, 1:9-18 A. Her prayer arose out of her “bitterness of soul.” 1: B. Her promise demonstrated that she was more concerned about honoring God than in ending her barrenness.1:11 C. She would not be distracted by other’s misunderstanding, 1:12-16 D. She was invigorated by her time in prayer, 1:17-18

3. She Trusted God to Answer, 1:19-20 A. She worshipped God, and was submissive to Him, 1:19 B. She resumed normal life, 1:19-20a C. She experienced God’s provision and bore a son D. She named her Son Samuel, which means, “God hears”!

4. She Kept Her Promise to God, 1:21-28 A. She gave herself fully to the nurture of her son, 1: B. She formally presented her child to the Lord, 1:24-28 C. Samuel’s worship at 3 years old testifies to Hannah’s guidance

5. She Responds with Praise, 2:1-10 Praise bursts forth from a heart overfull with thanksgiving. “There is no one holy like the Lord; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.”
