Do Now!  Review-  What were the three main empires of Western Africa?  What materials did these empires have?  How would these materials catch the eyes of Europeans?

What is imperialism?  Policy of extending authority and control over another territory or country  INK-THINK the brief article of imperialism

Imperialism in Africa  Who first attempted to establish control and authority in Africa?

The Portuguese  First Europeans to Arrive  Wanted a water route to India and Asia  Desired to spread Christianity  Late 1400’s- began trade with Guinea in “Gold Coast” of West Africa  By 1500’s Portuguese controlled Indian Ocean trade routes  Main settlements- Guinea, Ethiopia, Angola

The Dutch  Late 1500’s the Dutch followed Portuguese ideas and established trade in the Gold Coast  Took over the Portuguese controlled areas in West Africa  By 1640, Dutch were main imperialists in Africa  Main settlements- Cape Town
