Español En El Mundo Real Spanish 3

¿Sabías que…? Spanish is No. 3 among the more than 5,000 languages spoken in the world today. Only the languages of China and India are spoken by more native speakers. Even English take a back seat to Spanish with 330 million native speakers in the world, compared to 346 million for Spanish. The US is home to the world’s 2nd largest Spanish speaking community. Spanish is spoken by more than 37 million US citizens at home.

Spanish is currently the most widely taught non- English language in U.S. secondary schools and of higher education. More than 1.4 million university students were enrolled in language courses in autumn of 2002 and Spanish is the most widely taught language in American colleges and universities with 53 percent of the total number of people enrolled, followed by French (14.4%), German (7.1%) Italian (4.5%), America Sign language (4.3%), Japanese (3.7%), and Chinese (2.4%) although the totals remain relatively small in relation to the total U.S population.

A majority of the 300,000 ATM’s nationwide are multilingual. 90% offer Spanish and English. This is an increase of 58% between 1997 and 2011.

Many fast food restaurants are beginning to cater to the Spanish-speaking community. Burger King now carries a Spanish-language menu.

Can you name the top 5 television network channels (no particular order)? ABC NBC CBS FOX Univision

What do the NFL teams Arizona, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami, New Orleans, San Diego, Tampa Bay, and NY Jets have in common? They all broadcast games in Spanish on the radio.

ABC’s Monday Night Football was the 1st most watched show in Hispanic homes last year.

Project Overview Find 10 every-day items that have Spanish on them. These items can be anything from the directions on a macaroni and cheese box to a warning on a mouthwash bottle. The whole idea is to find things that we use that have both Spanish and English on them.

You will arrange all 10 items on a poster board with the title “Español En El Mundo Real.” With this project, you will also write a reaction paper.

Reaction Paper Overview The reaction paper should address the following questions: 1. What did you expect to find from this project? 2. From your findings and the facts that we just discussed, what is the impact or influence of the Spanish language and culture on our society today? 3. What, if any, impact will it have on our future?

Both the poster board and reaction paper are due Tuesday, January 20 th
