Sports and Concussion

Ronney Jenkins O Former NFL player O Suffered multiple traumatic head injuries O Has attempted suicide O Says he has reached out for help & gotten no response

NFL Lawsuit O 5,000+ players sued the NFL for compensation for certain injuries associated with repeated head trauma O The lawsuit was brought because the players accused the league of hiding information about the dangers of concussions O There is no cap on how much money can be paid out and payments can be up to $5m

NFL Lawsuit “The proposed settlement provides for three benefits: 1. Baseline medical exams for retired NFL players; 2. Monetary awards for diagnoses of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, Dementia and certain cases of chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE (a neuropathological finding) diagnosed after death; and 3. Education programs and initiatives related to football safety.” -According to the NFL Concussion Settlement Program’s website

Questions O What did you find surprising about the timeline? O Is the lawsuit fair? Is it enough given the fatal injuries? Do these players already get paid enough and know what they are signing up for? O What type of preventative policies may be put in place? Would these policies ruin the game?
