According to the Gospel of St Mark

How is this section a good follow-up to Jesus’ teaching in the synagogue? It gives us the results of his preaching

“Peter’s mother-in-law” Significance? (cf. 1 Corinthians 9:5; hint: Roman Catholics) 1 Corinthians 9:5 Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas? Peter was married, unlike the other “popes”

“began to wait on them” Significance? Full recovery

Why would this be a natural reaction to what Jesus was doing? Word and fame was spreading; this was unlike any other person around

Why did Jesus not want the demons to talk? Unlikely and unwanted testimonies “They knew who he was.” What does this tell us about the demons? (Luke 4:41) Luke 4:41 Moreover, demons came out of the many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak because they knew he was the Christ. They knew even better than the people who Jesus was

Why did Jesus pray? He was starting his earthly ministry Shows he is true man Being our Savior was hard work! Shows importance of prayer in our lives

Compare this verse and Luke 4:42. Compare whom Mark and Luke say were pursuing Jesus. How might the reader properly account for this difference? Luke 4:42 At daybreak Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. “Simon and his companions” and “the people” all together went to find Jesus

What does this verse tell us about Jesus’ mission on earth? To preach more than do miracles The people were finding him because he had done miracles

“driving out demons.” Why does Mark stress this? One of the things Jesus did; it shows his power over the devil

Describe leprosy and its effect on the human body. Aka Hansen’s disease: skin sores, nerve damage, muscle damage, disfigurement Greek word = bad skin disease “If you are willing.” What is the man saying about Jesus? He knows Jesus can do this, but does not force it; he is willing to live with a yes or no answer

“Touched the man.” This is contrary to God’s command in the Mosaic Law (Leviticus 13:44; 22:4). Yet Jesus is not guilty of breaking the law, since this is an example of the “higher law of love” taking precedence over the ceremonial law. Prove this is true. (Romans 13:10)

Love does no harm to its neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

“Touched the man.” This is contrary to God’s command in the Mosaic Law (Leviticus 13:44; 22:4). Yet Jesus is not guilty of breaking the law, since this is an example of the “higher law of love” taking precedence over the ceremonial law. Prove this is true. (Romans 13:10) Love is the fulfillment of the law and he was going to make him clean again with this miracle

“with a strong warning.” Why this emotion on Jesus’ part? He really did not want this to get out; he was going around to preach around the Galilee region

“Show yourself to the priest etc.” Use Leviticus 13: and 14:1-32 to explain these two commands.

13:45-46 The person with such an infectious disease must wear torn clothes, let his hair be unkept, cover the lower part of his face and cry out, “Unclean! Unclean!” As long as he has the infection he remains unclean. He must live alone he must live outside the camp.

On the eighth day he must bring two male lambs and one ewe lamb a year old, each without defect, along with three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering, and one log of oil.

“Show yourself to the priest etc.” Use Leviticus 13: and 14:1-32 to explain these two commands. The priest had to check if the person was really clean He had to offer sacrifices after he was clean

“As a testimony to them.” Who is meant by “them”? (the people in general or the priests?) Both priest and people, so all could see he is clean What is meant by “testimony” then? Witness, sign

Why does Jesus tell him not to tell anyone? Jesus knew this would interfere with his earthly ministry What are the results of the man telling everybody instead of being quiet? Jesus could no longer enter a town openly but stayed outside in lonely places. Yet the people still came to him from everywhere

How did Jesus take a risk in healing this man? Jesus knew what the man would do, but still healed him How is that a similar risk he takes with us as well? Jesus always run the risk of people loving the gift more than the Giver

What are some of the things Jesus did to show he was true God? Heals Peter’s mother-in-law, other people, a leper, preaches, drives out demons What were some of the reactions to these displays of power? Wanted the see him more and more, but for his miracles, not necessarily his words
