Wind Risk Prevention University of Ljubljana, Technical University of Dortmund, University of Split, Municipality of Ajdovščina

Participating partners  University of Ljubljana, Slovenia  Technical University of Dortmund, Germany  University of Split, Croatia  Municipality of Ajdovščina, Slovenia

Summary  Wind related risk in three studied areas:  Vipava valley (Slovenia)  North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany)  Dalmatia (Croatia)  Five major aspects:  Population  Infrastructure  Transportation  Buildings  Forests  Wind measurements – high frequency  Regulations

History of wind related events Vipava valley  Strong gusty wind bora (sl. burja) occuring 42 days/year  Maximum speed exceeds 200 km/h  Damages:  Agriculture  Transportation  Buidings  Infrastructure (e.g. electricity lines)  Risk to human lives

History of wind related events Vipava valley

History of wind related events Dortmund  Strong European winter storm: Kyrill (2007)  Wind gusts 202 km/h  Damages:  Forests  Hundreds of roofs Duesseldorf, Essen  Thunder storm in June 2014  Wind of up to 144 km/h  Damages:  city trees Malte Krudewig, von Bild 2014 © Michael Gohl, von WAZ 2014

History of wind related events Dalmatia  Strong gusty wind  Damages:  Agriculture  Transportation  Whirlwinds occur more regularly.

Expected wind related events  Climate change: available models ECHAM5 indicate possible increase in frequency and speed of wind in central and eastern central Europe.  The frequency of whirlwinds is increasing in Mediteranean region.

Basic criteria  Sustainability – plans, organization, administration, financing.  Transparency – decision-making, public and private funds and technical support.  Efficiency – municipal performance of planned wind risk management measures.  Relevance – security of the population and the social and economic development of the region.

Main goals  Raising awareness  Among the population living in the risk area  Improved information system  Promoting participation of people in wind risk managament  Promoting connection between the economic, social and political level in disaster risk management.  Strengthening local disaster risk management capabilities  Improved forest management strategy  Improved traffic conctrol strategy  Updated wind related bulding requirements
