Introduction to Ecology. What is Ecology?  Study of organism interactions with other organisms and the environment.
Ecosystem Structure Boundaries of Ecosystems Overlap and Change It is difficult to define the exact boundaries of an ecosystem. All ecosystems.

Agenda 06/25/10 Review Yesterday – Quiz Safety Class Syllabus Energy – Energy Models – Biomes

Safety Quiz 1.If you have any questions, you should ask the 2.List 2 other safety rules

Syllabus Highlight Main points Sign by Guardian

Energy Models Where does our energy come from? How do we get it? Type of Organism#This is a …. Beetle2 Spiders3 Ant~14 Grass~4 x10 10 = (40,000,000,000) Bee2 Fly2 Grass Leaper2 Dandelion~80 Clover60

Organisms within Energy Models? Producer: – Organisms that make their own food. – Plants, Autotrophs 1 st Order Consumer – Organisms that eat (consume) their energy by eating producers – Primary Consumers, 1 o heterotroph, herbivores 2 nd Order Consumer: – Organisms that eat (consume) their energy by eating 1 o consumers – 2 o heterotroph, carnivores

Where energy comes from? All energy comes from the Producers go through photosynthesis to change sun energy into energy they can use called Consumers eat producers, get energy in form of, which is broken down in respiration into a form that we can use. SUN GLUCOSE

Energy Flow IS all the energy that plants make passed on to their consumers? –Only 10% –90% used by organism (pump sap up tree, growth of leaves, etc..) This is true for all organisms!

3 Energy Models Ecological Pyramid: –Model that shows how energy flows in a straight line (what eats what) Food Chain: –See Above Food Web: –Model that shows all the energy flow within a ecosystem

Biome Presentations Words that must be used: – Biosphere – Biome – Ecosystem – Habitat (not in book!) – Niche – Examples Producers 1 st order 2 nd order Partners Present Biome  create a poster
