Being Aware of Your Changing Body Chapter 3 Section 4

Why Do Skin Problems Often Develop During Puberty? Some glands in the skin enlarge very quickly Oil glands in the face produce more oil than they did before puberty Block oil gland causes infection that is called…ACNE Girls and boys both get acne, but boys often have it worse.

Boys often get acne worse because they have hormones that produce more oil.

How to help control acne? Wash with soap and warm water daily Shampoo hair when it feels oily Get enough sleep and exercise Use soap with benzoyl peroxide See a dermatologist They treat skin problems

Why should we shower everyday and use deodorant ? Sweat glands, especially those in the armpits become more active during puberty. Perspiration reacting with bacteria on the skin causes odor.

Are Mood Changes Common During Puberty? Mood swings are caused by physical changes Endocrine glands give off hormones at an unsteady rate. Because of this unsteady rate you can have burst of energy followed by lack of energy and enthusiasm Your parents and other adults can help you understand the changes you are experiencing

Do Relationships Change During Puberty? You may go through times when you want to be treated like a child and other times when you want to be independent. Your parents don’t always know what you want. You have to talk with them during this time of change and tell them how you are feeling.

Relationships with Friends You may feel closer to people your own age who are going through the same things you are. You may start to spend time with one or two special friends. You may join groups of people your own age that share common interests. The problem with this is that you may become too much like the other group members. Be careful to not let the group become too important that you give up your right to make your own decisions.
