The Scientific Method

Science Vs. Technology 4 Science is NOT Technology 4 Science is to know, 4 Technology is to make 4 Most times, one needs the other, but science can be done w/o technology and vice versa

Fame, Fortune, and Despair 4 Some are famous for their science e.g Sagan or Hawking 4 Some get rich from their science e.g. Nobel Prize 4 Some find despair e.g. Robert Oppenheimer

“At the bench” Scientific Method 4 Documentation 4 Repeatability 4 Double-Blind 4 Correct Conclusions

Documentation 4 Hard evidence of the experiment 4 Pictures don’t cut it!

Before and After Photoshop: crop circles anybody?

Repeatability 4 The experiment must yield the same results regardless of who performs it or where it is done. 4 Some things are not repeatable: they may exist, but they aren’t science.

Double-Blind 4 Comes from medical tests where neither the subject nor the researcher knows who has the placebo 4 The scientist shouldn’t let his/her hopes, wishes, fears interfere with the experiment. 4 Difficult to do!!

Correct Conclusion 4 The data should lead you to a logical conclusion. 4 Jump frog!

Models/Theory 4 A model performs like what it represents, but might not look like what it represents. 4 A theory is not an educated guess! 4 Theories describe the mechanism or process behind a series of facts, not whether the facts are true.
