What Will We Say Responding to the Claims of “The Da Vinci Code.”

to the Claim that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were Married? What Will We Say...

Key Passage 1 Peter 3:15 Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.

 IN ANSWERING THE CLAIMS OF “THE DA VINCI CODE” WE MUST BE PREPARED TO ANSWER THE CLAIM THAT JESUS AND MARY WERE MARRIED.

What is the Claim?

BREAKING THE CLAIMS? Who was Mary Magdalene? was a follower and friend of Jesus (see Matt. 27:55; Mark 15:41). probably from Magdala, a village on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. Delivered from Demons. (Mark 16:9 & Luke 8:2) present during Jesus’ trial and sufferings (Matthew 27:45) she was at the Crucifixion (John 19:25). she watched Joseph of Arimathea bury Jesus (Luke 23:56).

BREAKING THE CLAIMS? Who was Mary Magdalene? Mary and some other women returned to Jesus’ tomb, found that the stone had been rolled away (John 20:1) and they ran back to tell the disciples that someone had taken the body. (John 20:2) she was the first person that Jesus appeared to after His resurrection (John 20:15-16) she returned to the disciples confirming the fact that she had seen the risen Lord (John 20:18).

BREAKING THE CLAIMS? Was bachelorhood condemned and celibacy forbidden by the Jews during the first century? John the Baptist appears to have remained unmarried. The Essenes forbade marriage. Paul was a Jew and he was a bachelor he promoted the celibate life as a gift from God.

BREAKING THE CLAIMS? Were Jesus and Mary Magdalene married? And if they were, would that somehow discredit Jesus’ claim of deity? Was the word "companion" synonymous with the word "spouse" during the first century? And if Mary was married to Jesus, what was her last name?

BREAKING THE CLAIMS? Did Jesus commission Mary to be His sole successor? "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone." Ephesians 2:19-20

BREAKING THE CLAIMS? Did a secret Society exist to hide this truth? the Priory of Sion Knights Templar

Conclusion: Based upon the historical evidence we have no reason to assume that Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married.
