Copenhagen|Barcelona|Kaohsiung Summit on Service Innovation in Cities

SILOING RESPONSIBILITY IN CITIES Problem: Traditional city planning causes silos of responsibility  decreased efficiency, lack of ’ownership’ and engagement in society Solution: Mapping responsibility for spots & areas in a city to ensure sustainability and efficiency in management. Delegating responsibility to citizens in order to facilitate engagement in and relation to society.

DEMOCRACY vs. EFFICIENCY Problem: Democratic involvement of citizens and/or employees in decision-making slows down process, leading to decreased efficiency Solutions: 1. Citizen involvement through new technological tools (web, text messaging etc.)  Easier access to authorities for citizens + higher degree of efficiency in service functions (synchronized text messaging less time-consuming than /telephone calls + more flexible in terms of location), adaption to the dramatic sociological changes caused by technology. 2. Appointment of strong and inspiring leader figures who listen, but not afraid to say NO. Appointing a leader and trusting his/her dispositions is a democratic process.
