© British Telecommunications plc Senior Engineer Review Field, Plan and Build

© British Telecommunications plc Vision ‘A national team of senior engineers with unified goals, clear responsibilities and measurable objectives, a forum of technical expertise where knowledge sharing is commonplace and all are equally committed to the skills and development of an allocated group of engineers.’

© British Telecommunications plc Key Outcomes Consistency (Nationally and within technical area) Clearly Defined Role (Responsibilities, Expectations and Career Path) Measurable Objectives (Accurate Reporting of Performance Against Objectives)

© British Telecommunications plc Consistency (within technical area) By breaking down the management areas and allocating an even number of engineers to each senior it will enable more focused delivery of training and a ensure workload is manageable.

© British Telecommunications plc Clearly Defined Role

© British Telecommunications plc Clearly Defined Role cont… Clarifying the senior roles and responsibilities will ensure there is.. A clearly defined career path from engineer to senior. A consistent national approach to learning and development, special projects, escalations and KPI performance. It will also ensure current seniors build up their skills in other areas and are not pigeon-holed into one type of project.

© British Telecommunications plc Measurable Objectives – Creating realistic and achievable Job Standards Field Productivity The amount of time spent in the field will differ between field/ rigging/ power as there is a difference in ratio of senior to engineer. Team Skill Level Skill levels of assigned engineers will be recorded and monitored and quarterly increases in skill level measured to reflect individual performance against the objective. Special Projects (Work-Load Sharing) The ability to measure not only the success of projects but the pro-active sharing of project work- loads between other members of the senior engineer team to ensure other job standards do not suffer and to encourage further sharing of knowledge and skills. Team KPIs Taking an active role in KPI performance and service level, keeping track of KPIs, identifying and addressing failures and delivering training to combat problem areas.

© British Telecommunications plc Steps to achieve desired outcomes.. 1.Key Trainer Skills Course 2.Update and Agree Objectives / Job Standards 3.Introduction to Skills and Development Tool 4.Assign Individual Engineers to Seniors 5.Create Senior Engineer Forum 6.Assign Ownership of Skills / Knowledge Categories This Week After 2 nd Course (All seniors completed)

© British Telecommunications plc Required output from this week 1.Complete Key Trainer Skills Course 2.Create first draft of revised Senior Engineer Job Description 3.Overview of Skills and Development Tool Functionality For Friday… Pull together details of the work you do in your current role and compare to your current Job Description.
