Professional activity: The degree is a professional course; leading to eligibility to register as a Social Worker Key tasks include: Assessing needs, risks and circumstances Helping people access resources/advocacy Communication & engagement Fulfilling statutory duties Working across agencies and disciplines Working with individuals, families, groups and communities

Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Regulator of the profession Validates all Social Work courses Sets out minimum entrance requirements On successful completion of course graduates are eligible to register with the HCPC Registration means graduates are eligible for employment as a Social Worker Note: Work of the Reform Board and the College of Social Work(TCoSW)

Entry Requirements: Typical offer: 260 – 300 points GCSE Maths & English (Min Grade C or ’certificated equivalents’) Competence in written & spoken English (Level 0.7) Ability to use IT facilities Relevant Social Care work/experience (paid or voluntary) Appropriate personal & intellectual qualities Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS formerly CRB) & Health checks Participation in a selection process

Selection process Involves: 1.A written exercise 2.Participation in a group discussion 3.Individual interview

Structure of the Degree: Level 4: ‘Pre-professional’ year Level 5: 50% classroom & 50% field practice Level 6: 50% classroom & 50% field practice The course is currently being re-validated and whilst the content will be similar, the structure and order of delivery might be altered

Course modules: Level 4 Introductory modules to: Nature of social work Policy and legal contexts of social work Human growth, development and the social environment (children and families, and adults) Social service delivery systems Direct methods of practice Indirect methods of practice Social work practice – ‘fitness for practice’ Skills training

Course modules: Level 5 Direct social work methods with individuals, families, group and communities Social work with specific service user groups Social work research First practice experience (70 days )

Course modules: Level 6 Second practice experience (100 days) Advanced social work methods of practice Contemporary issues in social work Research project

Career/employment opportunities: Work in a range of organisations/settings - statutory, private, voluntary, independent Children, Young People, Adults, Individuals, Groups & Communities Social policy, social research & education

Bursaries and packages to support undergraduate students Bursaries: A large number of bursaries are available for the second and third year of study (to support students whilst on placement). There have been recent changes in the amount and allocation of these. See Department of Health guidance for details. Range of Packages: Aimed at all students. For those taking A levels students achieving AAB or ABB are eligible for some financial support from the university. Other financial support packages are available for those studying BTEC and CACHE diplomas at equivalent levels, as well as other vocational qualifications.
