Region IV K-12 STEM Outreach May 10, 2010

Region Programs Planned (Hoped?)  Section PCO Manual. Write  Expand Mars Rover to other Sections  Attend training in Nashville  Find my Deputy/Successor  Inform Sections again of AskPolaris  Represent Region, Section with Mars Rover Celebration booth at Education Alley, Space 2010

Section Programs Four Sections have PCO Chairs  Albuquerque, Holloman, Houston, Southwest Texas Reports received from two Sections  Albuquerque, Southwest Texas Large programs:  Houston’s Mars Rover Model Celebration Mars Rover Model Celebration –450 children, 26 schools, ~140 volunteers  Space Education Days – Holloman –1600 Children  BEST Robotics Support – Holloman, Southwest Texas Most Programs are small involvements with larger programs run by partners  Need mechanisms for mobilizing folks into AIAA branded programs Need to encourage more communication to entire membership of a section  People focus on their own neighborhood, don’t think about serving entire region  Little use of Section, AIAA media Biggest gap: providing Section support to our EA members

Albuquerque Program AIAA Branded Events  Supported, interacted with grant recipient school –Mrs. Michelle Skinner, a kindergarten teacher at Sunset View Elementary School in Albuquerque submitted a proposal that involved having personnel from the Explora Science Museum come to her classroom to conduct hands-on activities to teach the children about simple machines.

Albuquerque Program Events Supported  School to the World Event. Had Booth  Central New Mexico Science and Engineering Challenge (Science Fair) –Dinner Reception for winners May 10

Holloman Program AIAA Branded Events  Southwest Regional Technology Symposium, Las Cruces, April Events Supported  Holloman Middle School Science Discovery Night  BEST Robot Competition  Space Education Days  AHS Concrete Project  AHS Airplane Project  HIS Science Night  AHS Water Rocket Project

Houston Program AIAA Branded Events  Mars Rover Model Celebration  AIAA Houston Night at the George Observatory Events Supported  No report

Southwest Texas Program AIAA Branded Events  High School research mentoring  High School research awards Events Supported  BEST Robot Competition –San Antonio –Texas Regional –National  Alamo Regional Science and Engineering Fair  Students Signature in Space program

Southwest Texas Program, cont’d Events Supported  4 Jan 2010: spoke to Aviation Explorers' Post 816 about careers in Aerospace Engineering (3 high-school students).  12 Feb 2010: met with the parent of a young female future engineer to give guidance on how to foster her gifts.  17 Feb 2010: spoke to approximately 70 4th and 5th graders at Floresville Elementary about Aerospace Engineering, then watched their (air-powered) rocket launches.  20 Feb 2010: set up a table at the Witte Museum's Family Science Day. Spoke to many K-12 students and parents about aerospace engineering careers.  March 2010: exchanged s with a 12th-grade student at Smithville High School to answer questions about engineering as a career.  Immediate future -- 6 May 2010: I am scheduled to do a series of engineering careers presentations at Irving Middle School.
