Element and Compound Reassessment Review Directions: Click “Slideshow” then “From Beginning” to view this show properly. As you go through take detailed note on each page. Be sure to use the page titles for your sub heading to keep you note organized. Then go back and study the information. Write down any questions or things you do not understand.

An element is a substance that is made from one kind of atom only. It cannot be broken down into simpler substances. An element atom Elements

Element Symbols Elements are PURE SUBSANCES made of only one type of atom. So chemists do not have to write out the whole name of an element, they are represented by symbols of one or two letters. *An element symbol only contains one capital letter but may also have a lower case letter.!

Elements make up Compounds The elements, alone or in combinations, make up our bodies, our world, our sun, and in fact, the entire universe.

Compounds When elements chemically combine to make different substance it is called a compound. Compounds are made of two or more elements joined. Compound formulas are written by combining the element symbols together.

A compound is a substance that is made from more than one element. atom A compound made up of 2 different elements A compound made up of 7 different elements Compounds

A compound can be broken down into the elements that make it up. A compound made up of 3 different elements An element Compounds

PRACTICE! On the next slide is a COMPOUND or ELEMENT practice chart. Read the information given in a row and decide whether it is an element or a compound. Click to check your answer.

MaterialMade up of:Element or compound Water Hydrogen and Oxygen Coal Carbon Carbon dioxide Carbon and Oxygen Oxygen Chalk Calcium, Carbon & Oxygen Wax Carbon & Hydrogen Table salt Sodium & Chlorine Helium Compound Element

11 PRACTICE READING COMPOUNDS! Read the compound formula and see if you can figure out HOW MANY ELEMENTS are in it and WHICH ELEMENTS they are. Click to check your answer. NaHCO ₃ NaCl C ₆H₉O₆ 4 – sodium, hydrogen, carbon, oxygen 2 – sodium, chlorine 3 – carbon, hydrogen, oxygen

Elements in our Earth Looking this image, you can see although there are 118 know elements on our planet the majority of solid earth is made up of just a handful of those elements.

Elements in our Earth Humans are mostly Oxygen and __________ which is the basis or all living things Carbon

Elements in our Earth Earth’s crust is also mostly Oxygen but it also has a lot __________ Silicon

Elements in our Earth Did you know the air we breath is NOT mostly oxygen??? It does have a lot of Oxygen but is mostly made of _________. Nitrogen

Elements in our Earth So you see, out of all the elements we know exist, the bulk of our planet and all the living things on it are made mostly of just a handful of those elements.
