Structures and Strategies & 2-2 structures in volleyball

1.2.1 Structure Players have clearly defined roles, positions with an identified setter in a the net When in possession at service (3 person defensive unit at the net with two blockers and 1 player covering the tip) Diamond formation with3 player service reception unit responsible for getting the ball (accurate and high) to the setter. This reception triangle ensures the court is well covered X X X X

1.2.1 Structure The two wide players also become the attacking unit and link up with setter to vary the tempo of the game. The final back court player acts as a server and field defence of cross court spike. Short lines of communication Relies on players being able to fulfil roles

2.2 structure O A more square formation with a choice of setters and attackers as well as back court service reception O 2 service reception unit less confusion of who plays first touch but a larger area to cover O More margin for error in 1 st touch due to choice of setter O 2 player defensive unit at the net to block and cover tips

Strengths of structure O Good lines of communication (Less of a turn to be on help) O Good court coverage due to diamond formation especially in service reception (heart of the court covered) O Clearly defined roles and responsibilities and identified setter. Less confusion O Lots of width in attack with choice of hitters in attacking unit. Unpredictable play O 3 man defensive unit at the net and back court to cover court and recover any error.

Weaknesses of structure O Players may be unsure of their roles in both attack and defense. O Players unable to fulfil role for a number of reasons. (Physical characteristics, technical or tactical weaknesses) O A good opposing server could penetrate the whole structure and serve down the lines O Opposition could identify a weak receiver in service reception O If units do not communicate play can be predictable.

2.2 structure strengths O In defence pretty quickly O No specialised roles. More difficult for opposition to identify individual team strengths and weaknesses until the last minute O Greater margin for error in the first touch with two possible setters.

2.2 Weaknesses O Poor lines of communication O No clear setter to dictate play and provide structure O Larger area to cover in service reception for only two receivers O Large gap in the middle and down the sides for opposition to expose and attack in service and attacking play O Only two man defensive unit at the net O Only one attacker at the net reducing options O Defensive responsibilities, more movement necessary to cover large area of court

Homework O Page 43 of homework booklet - description of structures O Use class info recording sheets plus p10 in your notes. Use additional paper to extend your answer!! O Pages 41 – 42 on the strengths and weaknesses of both structures. Use notes from the class and p9 in your workbook O No excuses for poor responses. Use the study aids you have been provided with O Deadline - Wednesday
