PRIMARY ADVANTAGE MATHS PROGRAMME A MODEL OF BEST PRACTICE HOLBEACH PARENTS’ EVENING 29 TH JANUARY 2015

This Evening’s Aims: Briefly introduce the ‘Primary Advantage’ programme and it’s philosophy. Share what this change looks like in the classroom in a little more detail. For you to experience a range of activities that show the theory in practice in our classrooms.

Primary Advantage Key components USING PRACTICAL (CONCRETE) RESOURCES AND IMAGES TO SUPPORT UNDERSTANDING OF MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS SYSTEMATICALLY USING MATHEMATICAL LANGUAGE TO TALK ABOUT MATHS IMPROVING THE TEACHERS’ UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT TO TEACH AND HOW TO TEACH IT

USING PRACTICAL (CONCRETE RESOURCES)

Start with the “real thing” …

Then representations of the ‘real’ thing…

And finally… place value rods and counters

Which resource when? Children vary in their level of experience so the teacher will choose the best resource to help the child. Later, children can choose for themselves when they need a concrete resource to help them and which one.

Images to support understanding of Maths Number Bonds- Part-Part-Whole Relationships How many puffins are swimming? 3 puffins swimming How many puffins in the boat? 6 puffins in the boat How many puffins altogether? 9 puffins altogther. 3 is a part 6 is a part 9 is the whole amount 3 6 9

Abi has 2 plant pots. She plants 7 seeds in each pot. How many seeds does she plant altogether? Images to support understanding of Maths The ‘bar’ model

Write numbers in the boxes to make this correct = 23 13? ? Images to support understanding of Maths The ‘bar’ model 23 10

Images to support understanding of Maths The ‘bar’ model Three-quarters of a number is 48 What is the number? (Divide by the numerator and then multiply by the denominator.) 64

Images to support understanding of Maths The ‘bar’ model 700kg kg

PRIMARY ADVANTAGE MATHS PROGRAMME A MODEL OF BEST PRACTICE Please visit the classrooms to try out the resources and use the images to solve some problems.
