Unhealthy Relationships Types of Abuse Date Rape What You Should Do

What is Abuse?? The intentional physical, emotional, sexual, and/or verbal maltreatment from one person to another.

Types of Abuse Physical Abuse Sexual Abuse Emotional/Verbal/Mental

Physical Abuse Intentionally inflicting bodily harm or injury on a person Shoving, slapping, kicking, grabbing, etc. Intimidation Use of weapons

Sexual Abuse Forcing a person to engage in sexual activities of any kind. (Does not need to involve sexual intercourse!) Unwanted touching, forced sexual activities, pressure to have sex

Emotional Abuse Put-downs, insults, rumors Threats Possessiveness Overdependency Humiliation Accusations

Abuse is about POWER & CONTROL Abusers may feel insecure or uncertain about themselves or may feel they have no control in their lives. This may cause them to use power and control in their relationships to make themselves feel better.

A Look Into Your Relationships… Does your partner’s jealousy stop you from seeing your friends or doing things you enjoy? Does your partner make fun of you, insult you, or put your family or friends down? Do you make decisions TOGETHER? Do you feel comfortable saying “NO” to your partner? Has your partner ever threatened you to get what he/she wants?

A Look Into Your Relationships… Do you feel pressured by your partner to do things that make you feel uncomfortable? Does your partner help you to feel good about yourself by listening and respecting your opinions? Does your partner blame you when he/she messes up or when things go wrong? Does your date always need to know what you are doing?

Why It’s So Hard to Leave… Love Promises Confusion Denial Low self-esteem Peer pressure Guilt Fear Belief you can change your partner False hope

Cycle of Abuse

Date Rape Rape is a form of assault involving non- consensual sexual intercourse. Even if the individuals involved know one another and have had sexual intercourse before, no one has the right to force a sexual act on another person.

Age of Consent The age of consent in New Jersey, for men and women is 16. This applies both to heterosexual and homosexual relationships. This means that at 16, a person in New Jersey may legally agree to have sex with an adult, in most cases. A different set of rules applies to situations where there is an imbalance of power. The age of consent is usually 18 or even 21. This is to prevent sexual exploitation of young people by adults. The New Jersey age of consent laws are complex. Under New Jersey law, a person aged 13 or older usually can consent to sex with someone who is less than 4 years older. Under New Jersey law, a 15-year-old girl could legally consent to sex with her 17-year-old boyfriend, but not his 35-year-old uncle. Under New Jersey law, no one under 13 may legally consent to sex, regardless of the circumstances. Age of consent is a moot point in cases where the individual is mentally retarded, mentally ill or otherwise incapable of giving informed consent.

Date Rape Alcohol and Drugs are often involved in cases of date rape. Alcohol inhibits an individual’s ability to think clearly and use common sense.

Date Rape Drugs Most common drugs used: -- Rohypnol (“roofies”) -- Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) -- Ketamine

Rohypnol A pill that dissolves in liquids. When slipped into a drink, a dye in the new pills makes clear liquids turn bright blue and dark drinks turn cloudy. - Why is this not always helpful?

Rohypnol The effects of Rohypnol can be felt within 30 minutes of being drugged and can last for several hours. Other effects include: Muscle relaxation or loss of muscle control Difficulty with motor movements Drunk feeling Problems talking Nausea Loss of consciousness (black out) Confusion & Memory Loss Dizziness Sleepiness Lower blood pressure Death

GHB GHB comes in 3 forms – a liquid with no odor or color, white powder, or pill GHB takes effect in about 15 minutes and can last 3 or 4 hours. It is very potent: A very small amount can have a big effect. So it's easy to overdose on GHB.

GHB Relaxation Drowsiness Dizziness Nausea Loss of consciousness (black out) Seizures Can't remember what happened while drugged Problems breathing Tremors Sweating Vomiting Slow heart rate Dream-like feeling Coma Death ** MOST SERIOUS EFFECTS**

Ketamine Liquid or White powder Ketamine is very fast-acting. You might be aware of what is happening to you, but unable to move.

Ketamine Distorted perceptions of sight and sound Lost sense of time and identity Out of body experiences Dream-like feeling Feeling out of control Impaired motor function Problems breathing Convulsions Vomiting Memory problems Numbness Loss of coordination Aggressive or violent behavior Depression High blood pressure Slurred speech

Where Do These Drugs Come From? Rohypnol – NOT legal in the U.S. It is legal in Europe and Mexico, where it is prescribed for sleep problems and to assist anesthesia before surgery. It is brought into the United States illegally. GHB – Available in other countries to treat different types of sleep disorders (insomnia, narcolepsy, etc.) Ketamine – Ketamine is legal in the U.S. for use as an anesthetic for humans and animals. It is mostly used on animals. Veterinary clinics are robbed for their ketamine supplies.
