Terms  Chain of infection: Series of step in the cycle of you getting sick  Pathogen: Microorganism that cause disease  Natural Environment: Where the pathogen lives  Reservoir: Where it waits (lives)- person, animal, soil, food, water

Terms  Portal of exit: How it is transmitted 1.Examples- 2.Salvia-Mono 3.Blood-HIV 4.Feces-Intestinal Disease 5.Nose/throat- cold/flu

Terms  Transmission: 1.Directly-person to person (hand shake, sneeze) 2.Insect-mosquitoes (West Nile) 3.Inanimate objects-utensils, toilet seats, syringes, door needles  Portal of entry: Skin, inhaled, food, & water

How to interrupt the Chain  1. Stay home if you’re sick  2. Wash hands  3. Immunize your kids

Pathogens  Infectious diseases can occur when pathogens, microorganisms that cause disease, enter your body. If your body does not fight off the invaders quickly and successfully, you develop and infection!!!

Bacteria  Single Cell organism that can live almost anywhere on earth  -Chlamydia  -Whooping Cough  -Strep  -Pinkeye  -TB  -Tetanus

Viruses  A piece of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat.  -Common Cold  -AIDS  -HIV  -Measles  -Chicken Pox  -Polio  -Small pox  -Herpes

Fungi  Plantlike organism that cause diseases of the lungs, the mucous membranes, and the skin.  -Athlete’s Foot  -Ringworm  -Yeast Infection  -Jock Itch

Protozoa  Single-celled microorganisms that are larger and more complex then bacteria.  -Malaria  -Dysentery  -African Sleeping Sickness

Parasitic Worms  Worms that feed.  -Hookworm  -Tapeworm  -Pinworms
