Hull Lifecycle Programme Intertanko Annual Meeting Dr. Pierre C. Sames, Head of Strategic Research and Development

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 2 Hull condition monitoring Requirements come from flag states and classification IMO requirements (ESP, PSPC) IACS requirements cargo owners CAP surveys, TMSA ship owners Optimizing hull maintenance Thickness measurements and visual inspections are the tools.

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 3 The goals of the GL Hull Lifecycle Programme (HLP) Life-long access to all information on hull condition Fast overview and clear communication through 3D visualization First class support for planning and assessment of hull inspections Avoid costly repairs through timely maintenance

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 4 Measurements typically take several days Approx. same time needed for reporting as for measurement Highly manual process Frequent copying of data Difficult to visualize findings No electronic assessment support (except Excel tables) Thickness Measurements (TM) today

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 5 Measurement Preparation Structural Modelling Data Collection Visualisation, Assessment & Report Generation Assessment of thickness measurements with GL Pegasus Strength Assessment TM Company Ship Owner GL

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 6 TM companies work more efficiently Generate printouts for use on board Create sequence(s) of points in GL Pegasus Take the readings and mark locations and order on printouts connect UTM Gauge and download results to GL Pegasus Visualise and print the results... measurement values are transferred automatically locations are only entered once  no redundant data input

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo weeks measurements up to 4 weeks for final reporting Ship out of drydock Ship in drydock The standard process class renewal Thickness measurement process is accelerated with GL Pegasus update of model model creation 1-2 weeks measurements final reporting Ship out of drydock Ship in drydock The process with GL Pegasus class renewal The target: report finished, before ship leaves dry dock

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 8 Visualisation/Assessment of Results Easy identification of hotspots: S:substantial corrosion (yellow) I:substantial corrosion, to be investigated whether locally limited (orange) R: has to be renewed (red) Results can be visualised in both 2D and 3D clear view of inspection results:  avoid misinterpretation of results  better communication with repair yards

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 9 Avoid unnecessary repairs through assessment of longitudinal strength Today, measured thickness is compared to maximal diminutions in Excel tables Repairs can be avoided in cases when longitudinal and local strength is still sufficient  with class notation HLP, systematic recalculation of stress distribution etc. is done to avoid unnecessary repairs

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 10 TM Case Study, July 2006 Measurement campaign Paradise N Ore Carrier, Reederei F. Laeisz, Rostock Length 321 m, breadth 58 m, deadweight t On voyage from Taranto (southern Italy) to Rio de Janeiro N&P Maritime- und Industrietechnik GmbH 14 days on voyage in ballast condition class renewal partheld Scope: ballast tanks, cargo spaces, main deck, coaming, hatch covers

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 11 Measurement with GL Pegasus Definition of measurement sequences within Pegasus according to planned fill levels of ballast tanks TM Case Study

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 12 Transfer of results Done at end of day Transfer of measurement data from UTM device to laptop running GL Pegasus Checking results using 2D and 3D graphics Attach photos if requried TM Case Study

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 13 End of voyage Generation of print report including graphics Hatch covers, aft- and forepeak measurements have been reported conventionally (manual tables and sketches, combined in final report) Issuance of survey statement referring to TM report TM Case Study

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 14 Summary Measurement procedure itself remains the same Combined approach poses no problem (conventional tables are also included in GL Pegasus) System can be used on voyage as well as in yard TM Case Study

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 15 The scope of HLP Initial creation and regular updates of a 3D ship model GL Pegasus driven Thickness Measurements Direct Access to TM results via fleet-online GL Pegasus Viewer software for data visualisation Class notation HLP Hull Monitoring based on the 3D ship model Use HLP starting with newbuilding phase as a tool for the owner / operator to keep track of the ship’s status available service available 12/08

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 16 Benefits for Ship Owners and Operators Easier assessment: graphical overview of thickness measurements Faster availability of final report Higher quality of data, no redundant data input Avoid unnecessary repairs through fast re-assessment of longitudinal and local strength Use the 3D Model throughout the whole vessel’s lifecycle for chronological comparison of surveys, easy comparison between sister ships Easier communication using graphics (for crew, repair yards,...) Clearly document structural condition for administrative bodies, potential buyers, etc.

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 17 Thank you for your kind attention! "The GL Pegasus software produced and developed by GL will provide a professional standard that the industry will rely on for making critical decisions. In addition, the software is easy to use.„ M. Stevenson, President, Ultrasonics and Magnetics Corporation, New Orleans

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 18 HLP: 3D Model Scope/Requirements Scope of a Full 3D Model all structural parts, which are relevant for thickness measurement purposes (including hull, superstructures and hatch covers) Required Drawings General Arrangement Lines Plan Midship Section, Construction Profile and Deck Plans, Shell Expansions Fore and Aft Body Bulkheads Double Bottom Construction. Subscription to HLP at least 2 months prior to first TM Partial modelling is possible according to required areas and individual arrangements

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 19 What is Hull Lifecycle Programme? Prompt support for hull condition assessment throughout the complete vessel’s lifecycle HLP provides a faster Thickness Measurement Report without effort from the Owner’s side Effortless and quick visualization of the vessel’s condition to the GL Surveyor, a vetting company or potential customer HLP is a powerful tool for the planning meeting for Tankers, Bulkers or the Thickness Measurement procedure Easy comparison of possible problem areas of all sister vessels. Available for any type of vessel

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 20 Factors influencing condition of steel structures Any kind of contact damages  deformations or cracks Overstress of the structure  deformations or cracks by environment and cargo Corrosion or wear  diminution Fatigue  cracks

Hull Lifecycle ProgrammeNo. 21 Easier assessment: graphical overview of thickness measurements
