DIRECT SPEECH GRADE IV ENGLISH LANGUAGE MS. SADAF KASHIF FEBRUARY 4, 2011

The exact words spoken by a person is called direct speech. The spoken words are written in speech marks. Open the door Tom and see who is there!

The phrase that tells about the speaker of the sentence is called reported phrase Uncle John said, ”Open the door Tom and see who is there ! ’’

If the reported phrase is written after the spoken words than a comma is used within the speech marks. “ Open the door Tom and see who is there,” said Uncle John.

Any punctuation mark like comma, question mark, exclamation mark or full stop is always written within the speech marks. Uncle John asked, ”Could you please open the door, Tom ? “

The first word written within the speech marks must always begin with a capital letter. Uncle John exclaimed,” You like Sam but Jim is your best friend.”

Sometimes we can split the direct speech into two parts. Each part must make sense on its own. “ Open the door Tom,” said Uncle John, “ and see who is there !”

This is how you use it in paragraphs….. Christopher Columbus longed to go to sea. He thought about it all day and dreamed of it all night. ”This is the place for a sailor to be !” he thought. His longing for sea adventures increased when a fellow map maker showed him places visited by Marco Polo. “Look!” said his friend, “ Marco Polo visited the Indies and saw the most incredible things.”

Why do we use direct speech…. Direct speech quotes the exact words spoken by a person. It makes a story / report even more interesting and meaningful.

Thank you
