Parts of Speech The Big Four 1. Noun - person, place, or thing. Eg. doctor, house, love, time, book 2. Verb - action or state of being. Eg. bake, order, is, was, ran, laughed, crashed, be

Continue…. 3. Adverb - modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. By modify we mean that it tells us more about it. Adverbs tell us where, when, how, or to what extent. Eg. suddenly, regularly, infrequent, also, quickly 4. Adjective - modifies, or defines by describing, a noun or a pronoun. The Adjective tells which one, how many, what kind, or how much. It usually comes before the noun it modifies. Eg. red, silly, most, unusual.

Continue… The Little Four 5. Pronoun - used in place of or another pronoun. It stands in for the noun, like an understudy of sorts. Eg. she, he, I, ourselves, no one, everybody, who 6. Preposition - shows how a pronoun or noun is related to some other word in the sentence. Prepositions usually indicate position or direction, or relation in time. An old adage to remember prepositions is "Anywhere a mouse can go and when he went there" Eg. across, at, of, until, from, before, under, over

Continue… 7. Conjunction - conjunctions are 'joining words' which connect words or groups of words. Eg. and, but, because, if, yet, so. 8. Interjection - a word or group of words that show feeling or sudden emotion. These are our 'actors' that add drama to the expression. An interjection can stand alone and not be considered a sentence fragment. Eg. Hey!, wow, my goodness, darn, stop, whoa.
