Trees! Tell me what you know about trees. Let us look at a picture of a tree.

What do you see? Lines… patterns… a tree?? So, what is this?

This is ‘Tree of Life’ created by Gustav Klimt Gustav Klimt painted the “Tree of Life” which is an important symbol in nearly every culture. The Tree of Life represents wisdom, protection, strength, and beauty. It reaches up into the sky and down into the earth. It links Heaven, Earth, and the Underworld. The swirled branches make people want to keep looking at the painting to explore and find more. Even with the mixed up patterns and swirly branches we still will always recognize it as The Tree of Life.

You are going to create your own ‘Tree of Life’ using wax resist technique. Lesson 1: Draw your tree with a pencil. Draw in all the swirled branches and the ground. Lesson 2: Use crayons of different colours to render your tree. Lesson 3: Use watercolour to paint the rest of your picture. Then, write a story for your ‘Tree of Life’ on your painting.
