WFP-Japan Cooperation Regional Capacity Building for Community-Based Swamp and Small Irrigated Village Plots Development

Objectives & Expected Impacts Utilize lowlands for agricultural production Build local capacity Improve food access for women Improve targeted households’ food security and income Increase production & income Improve nutrition through diversification Increase women’s land access for rice production

Targeted Countries Regional Project started in Mali and Burkina Faso from 2005, currently the fifth year Project activities are expanded to Guinea Bissau from 2009 Pilot Project started in Côte d’Ivoire from 2000 to 2005

Mali Rice Production: 3,250T (5.6T/ha) Beneficiaries: 2,380 households New beneficiaries in 2008 : 1,540 households 2006 sites (3 sites) 2007 sites (3 sites) 2008 sites (11 sites) 581T (5.5T/ha) 567T (5.4T/ha) 2,102T (5.7T/ha) Land reclaimed: 595 ha New reclaimed land in 2008 : 385 ha

Burkina Faso Rice Production: 1,270T (4.0T/ha) Beneficiaries: 1,300 households New beneficiaries in 2008 : 500 households 2006 sites (3 sites) 2007 sites (3 sites) 2008 sites (7 sites) 424T (4.4T/ha) 425T (4.2T/ha) 423T (3.4T/ha) Land reclaimed: 352 ha New reclaimed land in 2008 : 149 ha

Guinea Bissau 1.45ha is reclaimed: 3 sites in Bafata 2.Target beneficiaries: not yet confirmed

As Regional Evaluation Study will be conducted in Mali & Burkina Faso Feasibility study for the fourth country (Senegal) will be conducted Impact assessment will be conducted in Mali & Burkina Faso, this year or next year
