Introduction Natural World Products Ltd started processing brown bins 4 years ago Operate scheme for 3 local councils: Banbridge – 8,500 brown bins Newry & Mourne – 10,000 brown bins Armagh – 7,000 brown bins Last year NWP processed 5,395 tonnes of material and all of the councils have plans to distribute more brown bins.

Composting Long term aims/targets % diverted from landfill 2010 – 25% 2013 – 50% 2020 – 65% Strategies to help achieve targets Private/public relationships

Kerbside collections Application What is a brown bin contents positive factors negative factors

Kerbside collections How can it help achieve targets Example: Banbridge District Council population:55,000 number of households:22,000 households participating:4,500 (Jan 03)

Project results Banbridge Jan 2003-Dec month collection period tonnes brown bin collected Each household produces approx. 1 and a quarter tonnes of waste per year 40-50% of this is compostable and 80% can be recycled

Problems associated with setting up a scheme Needs to be done in manageable steps Pro-active education-educating householders how to use brown bin Need to ensure constant monitoring of input material otherwise end up with rejected loads.

Problems associated with processing brown bin Markets for end products High levels of contamination-every load needs checked Animal By Products Regulations

Contamination of Brown Bin

Markets for end product Good feedstock ensures good quality end product Local Councils need to look at using this end product in their parks and gardens

Long term goals Public/council relationships Councils need to make public aware of the importance of the scheme and get them to want to be pert of the scheme Trusted voice Promotion of compost products Give away days & buy back finished product Development of kerbside schemes EDUCATION,EDUCATION,EDUCATION

Risks & Rewards Risks Public co-operation Addressing risk Public education/involvement Rewards Sustainable recycling targets meet at minimal effort
