Time and Place South African rocks, Lucia Peng, Mengxi Fu 5days USA, China Mengxi Fu, Lucia Peng 2012
Artist statement The process of creation When I first got this assignment I thought about place, because it was an easy inspiration. Because I am from China and I currently live in the USA, travel is a big part of my life. My travels caused me to think about the special rocks I have. Because Lucia is my most important Chinese friend, she picked up these 4 rocks when she took a trip to South Africa. Before I left China to go to the USA, she gave two of them to me as a present. Although we are in two different countries, we are connected by the same rocks. I decided to do this work to honor our precious friendship and the rocks in China, which represents the permanent friendship and connection we have.
Artist statement The concept A travel of the rocks, the connection to my friend I and my best friend, who is in China, took the rocks to different places and photographed them at the same time in a 24 hour cycle over 5 days. For example, when it was 10:00 am in the USA, it was 10:00 pm in China. We really miss each other, but are not feeling lonely, for our hearts are connected. Mr. Rock has been to so many places: parks, gardens, streets, farms, museums, our universities, houses, China, the USA, South Africa… during these travels, he has made a lot of friends, such as a panda, deers, bears, other rocks, owls… therefore, he will be never alone. And neither will we.

The data were collected by noting down the date, time and place. It was almost same time in the same day, but in different countries. I took the rocks with me everywhere, including the classes, the school, my house, the restaurant, the garden etc. My friend is in China, she took pictures of the rocks in our hometown. We contacted with each other to correct the time through a software named “ We Chat”. The difference of time is 12 hours, but I use the same day so that it will be easy understanding.
