TEAM HBV 2013 WINTER CHINA OUTREACH Chengdu and Nanchong, Sichuan Province

Prior to the trip…  A lot of time and preparation was put into this trip from our American team, Chengdu team, and Nanchong team

Prior to the trip…  Chengdu and Nanchong had meetings every month to train and educate about Hepatitis B Virus  For their last meeting, they went out to the streets to practice the real thing

Purpose of the trip  Our mission of this trip is to advocate the dangers of HBV  We want to reach out to as many places as we could and inquire people as to why they couldn’t get the vaccine

First Day: Shuang Lan Hospital – Warming-up Day  Location: Chengdu  It was the first test for us to put our training into action  We set up a stand at the main entrance and paired off to attract people towards our booth  We handed out brochures, presents from Stanford, and survey forms  Many of us were rejected because many people thought we were passing out ads  It was discouraging but we got good experience so we knew what to improve on the second day

First Day: Shuang Lian Hospital

Second Day: Marketplace – Jing Xi Village Clinic  Location: Nanchong  We set up at the corner of a street where farmers gathered to sell their goods  There were many people that day that came to buy vegetables or other foods  This was a frustrating experience for all of us because many of the people didn’t want to listen to us while expressing haven’t done vaccine.  Great learning experience for all of us; we all learned to deal with rejection  It helped us to fill the survey and estimate the percentage of people not getting vaccine.

Second Day: Marketplace – Jing Xi Village Clinic

Second Day: Xi Hua Normal University  Location: Nanchong  We set up our stand in front of the cafeteria of a college campus  We had a lot more success in this place because the college students were more aware of what HBV was and were more willing to listen to us  Amongst the people who we asked and surveyed, many were very interested and concerned for the safety of themselves as well as their families

Second Day: Xi Hua Normal University

Third Day: Wu Feng Village Clinic  Location: Nanchong  We visited this hospital for only 30 minutes in the early morning and left because there were very little people that came to the hospital  We still received some surveys from this clinic however we did not achieve a substantial amount here  Soon, we moved to North Sichuan Regional Hospital

Third Day: Wu Feng Village Clinic

Third Day: North Sichuan Regional Hospital  Location: Nanchong  This hospital was one of the most crowded hospitals we went to  It was one of our most successful days on this trip; we got many surveys and people were willing to listen to us

Third Day: North Sichuan Regional Hospital

Fourth Day: Jing Sa Hospital  Location: Chengdu  We and our Chengdu volunteers split up into two hospitals: one at Jing Sa Hospital and one at Shuang Lan Hospital  A group of young volunteers joined us at Shuang Lan and because it was their first time, we were able to discuss how to talk to the people on the streets and how to attract them towards our booth  It was a successful day overall although Jing Sa did not have that many patients

Fourth Day: Jing Sa and Shuang Lan Hospitals

What did we achieve?  Statistics  204 surveys completed out of 500 printed  About 2000 brochures handed out of 2400 printed  6 hospitals/clinics visited  Totally 35 families, 57 volunteers participated  About 40 hours served

What did we achieve?  Introduce the concept and benefit of volunteering to many Chinese families and their children for the first time  Setup the foundation and fund to volunteering for the areas around  Bring the awareness of the dangers of HBV in high risk areas in China  Provide the resources for future outreach events  Build the bond among the teams from different places for the future events  Show the spirit of love, caring and commitment
