1 J OHN 4:1-7

There are four questions that John wants you to wrestle with: 1.What is your source of truth? 2.How do you tell truth from falsehood? 3.What qualifies you to determine truth from falsehood? 4.Have you settle the question of what is true?

What are you going to do now with Jesus Christ?

Question #1 What is your source of truth?

Question #2 How do you tell truth from falsehood?

Question #3 Am I qualified to determine truth from falsehood?

Question #4 “Are you wavering, or have you settled it?

The Meaning of “The Spirit” 1.Spirit could be an incorporeal being, that is like a non earthly presence, having no material body or form. That is a being or presence not constrained by space or time. 2.Spirit could mean a person inspired by a spirit—like a seer, or a prophet, or one the practices divination, or spiritualism. 3.Spirit could refer to a persons own spirit—like the spirit within a person 4.Spirit could refer to the utterances inspired by a spirit, in that way, spirit would be a metonymy, using the name of one thing, for naming another.

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.” C. S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

2 Peter 1:21 (ESV) 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.

1 John 4:3 (NLT) 3 But if someone claims to be a prophet and does not acknowledge the truth about Jesus, that person is not from God. Such a person has the spirit of the Antichrist, which you heard is coming into the world and indeed is already here.

1.What is the source of truth? The Holy Spirit’s instruction about Jesus, that came in person from the eyewitness of Jesus and was recorded for us in Holy Scripture. 2.How do you tell truth from non-truth? Just ask, what do you believe about Jesus. If you hear anything other than He is the Christ—fully God and fully man. You do not need to listen any further. 3.What qualifies you to determine truth from falsehood?

1 John 4:4 (ESV) 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

John 15:26 (NIV84) “When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

John 20:21–22 (NIV84) 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.

The Meaning of “The World” It refers to all that is hostile to God

1 John 4:5 (NIV84) They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.

1 John 4:2 (NIV84) 2 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God,

1 John 4:5 (NIV84) They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.

1 John 2:21 (NIV84) I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.

1 John 4:5 (NIV84) They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them.

In a spring 2002 poll, those who call themselves Christians in the U.S. were asked, "Which [of the following] statement[s] comes closer to your own views?" They replied: 1.The religion you practice is the only true religion: 19 percent 2.All religions have elements of truth: 77 percent 3.Don't know/not applicable/refused: 4 percent
