Atlantic Coastal Plain camp By: Anastasia Jordan

Why did I choose the Atlantic coastal plain? My class had to pick one out of three regions in Maryland and do a research on it to answer the question which out of the three regions would be the best to have a educational camp at? I chose the Atlantic coastal plain because it has many glories, history, and other amazing stuff you will learn about in the next slides.

History of the Chesapeake bay The Chesapeake bay has a lot of history and I’m going to tell you lot’s of it. Captain John Smith explored the Chesapeake bay in The Chesapeake bay was once the Susquehanna river until the Atlantic ocean flooded the Susquehanna river it caused glaciers to melt and there was so much water it made the Chesapeake bay. The Chesapeake bay bridge was open in 1952.

History The Atlantic Coastal plain had a extinct animal called the Carolina parakeet. There is lot’s of other history like how Baltimore was founded in There is lot’s more history to find out about the creatures, environment, and lot’s more history to look for.

Facts A lot of the Atlantic coastal plain is farmland. A lot of the crabs, oyster, fish, shrimp, and other seafood's you eat are from the Atlantic coastal plain. The Chesapeake bay is the largest body of water in Maryland. There is a lot of swamps and marshes in the Atlantic coastal plain. The Chesapeake bay is a very important part of the united states economy.

Educational activities Educational activities in the Atlantic coastal plain include going maybe to the Chesapeake bay or to somewhere with a source of water and learning about the places environment like how the Chesapeake bay and Atlantic ocean are getting more and more dirty! They can learn about the erosion that accurse in and out of the Atlantic coastal plain and how it ends up in the Chesapeake bay and Atlantic ocean it is called erosion. Also going and learning about the animals that live and lived there!

Culture/traditions The Atlantic coastal plain is very similar to our culture and traditions. The Atlantic coastal plain does have a lot more museums and performing arts though and we don’t have lot’s of museums and performing arts so that’s a tradition and a lot of there culture because that’s something in that region people like to do and watch. They celebrate stuff like we do for example Christmas and other holidays like that.

Being green Did you know that the Chesapeake bay is very dirty? Well people are trying to restore the Chesapeake bay and make it clean again! But they need help! They need people to recycle, try sometimes (once in a while) carpool, and planting trees! Any Marylander can help now matter where you are because a lot of that junk in rivers, streams, lakes, and other water recourses like that flow into the Chesapeake bay! Also being green can help the animals that live there because if it’s to dirty in the Chesapeake bay or even the Atlantic ocean can effect the animals that live there and drink there.

The economy The definition of economy is the services and goods of a region (or country). So the services there/jobs include: teacher’s, bankers, and police officers. There is also mining, farming, fishing, and more! And for goods there is places like markets and grocery stores. All of these things are a important part of the Atlantic coastal plain’s economy.

Fun activities Now the kids will learn a lot but they also need to have a little fun so here are some fun activities: Going on a boat ride in the Atlantic ocean or Chesapeake bay, they can go have a very nice meal, they can go fishing or swimming or other water activities, and more!

Wildlife The Atlantic Coastal Plain has a lot of our regular animals such as birds, squirrels, dogs, cats, and other regular animals we have. But they also have other animals we don’t have such as the Venus fly-trap, red wolf, red-cockaded woodpecker, and the now-extinct Carolina parakeet.

Interesting facts and websites A valuable fact that I thought I had to include is hurricane Sandy. Hurricane Sandy hit the Atlantic coastal plain on Sunday October 28 th 2012 through Tuesday October 30 th It hit ocean city Maryland and swept away the fishing pier, a lot of the boardwalk, and other amazing things. Websites I used included: nps.gov, maryland.gov, visitmaryland.com, green.maryland.gov, and a little bit of Wikipedia.
