Unit 3

 This growth in communications technology has revolutionized the way the businesses work and keep in touch with staff and customers.

 Face book sign language  Twitter  Morse code  Sounds  Speech  Flair  Sonar  Skype  MySpace  Running  Letter  Tumbler  Drums  Facial expression   msn  Sims  mms  Icy  Mitt  bbm  Languages

 At home you computer is connected to your printer and scanner. This works well. A computer which is not connected to the network, is know as a ‘stand-alone’ computer.  In a school or office, it would cost to much money for every computer to have a individual printer, so all the computers would be connected to the same printer.  If you join a computer to a network, they are able to share the printer. This means that they can bye more expensive printers.  A network is a electronically devises that you can share data, hardware and data.

 Local area Network (LAN)  Wide area network (WAN)  The internet  Intranet  Extranet  VPN (virtual private network)

 A network that is shared in the same area. It doesn’t cover a wide range. It only covers a small part.  Within a workspace, you can have different types of LAN. That allows us to access information from the network server.

 Stand alone is a computer is a computer that can not connect with any other  With workstations you can connect with a network, that is connected with many other computer.

 Usually a networked computer will allow you to send messages to a friend who is working on another computer.  You will probably see messages telling you that you are entering a networked system when you logon.  Sometimes you have a choice between, many different computers.

 This is a powerful computer that runs the network operating system and allows resources to be shared over the network by other devises and computers (called clients) connecting to it.  These devises could include printers, disk drivers, CD-ROM drivers, modems. Cameras, fax etc.  A file server must be kept in a cold room, dust free and the room has to be sacure.

 Coordinates printing on the network

 Software and data files can be shared  Users can work together on a single shared document  Users can communicate; for example, using instant messaging or  Users can stream media, so that they can view video and play audio on any computer or other devise attatched to the network

 Users can access the network from any other workstation or devise  Cheaper to buy one copy of software application and a pay a license fee for several computers that to buy individual licenses.  Users can share hardware devises.  Users can share internet connection

 Client-/ server networks  Peer-to-peer networks

 One or more computers are designated as the server  Client computers are those available tou you to use.

 Allows every computer to communicate directly with every other computer in the network.  A user can access data from any computer on the network  This type of LAN is limited to about 10 machines, after which the peformance drops and the system becomes low.

 All computers and other peripheral devices on the network are attached to cables that transmit data between them. A network cable is required.  Uses a wireless link to connect to the network.  Has three sets of components.

 Bluetooth and WiFi are different standards for wireless communication.  Bluetooth technology is useful when transferring information between two or more devices that are near each other when speed is not an issue, such as telephones, printers, modems and headsets. It is best suited to low-bandwidth applications like transfering sound data with telephones (i.e. with a Bluetooth headset) or byte data with hand-held computers (transferring files) or keyboard and mice.  Wi-Fi is better suited for operating full-scale networks because it enables a faster connection, better range from the base station, and better security (if configured properly) than Bluetooth.

 Bluetooth Wifi Range: 10 meters 100 meters Primary Devices: Mobile phones, mouse, keyboards, office and industrial automation devices Notebook computers, desktop computers, servers Ease of Use: Fairly simple to use. Can be used to connect upto seven devices at a time. It is easy to switch between devices or find and connect to any device. It is more complex and requires configuration of hardware and software. Specifications authority: Bluetooth SIG IEEE, WECA Year of development: Bandwidth: Low ( 800 Kbps ) High (11 Mbps ) Hardware requirement: Bluetooth adaptor on all the devices connecting with each other Wireless adaptors on all the devices of the network, a wireless router and/or wireless access points Cost: Low High Power Consumption: Low High Frequency: 2.4 GHz 2.4 GHz

 Type of resources://hostcomputer.domain/directory/ subdirectory/filename.extensions

 Microsoft Word: timetable.doc  Microsoft Excel: timetable.xls  Microsoft PowerPoint :timetable.ppt  Microsoft Access: timetable.dbs  A text editor timetable.txt  A zipped file timetable.zip  A webpage timetable.html  A pdf file timetable.pdf  A graphics file timetable.jpg

 View web pages  Bank online  Use search engine  Download free software  Access to discuss information via mailing list  Send and receive s  Online chatting  Shop online  Video conference  Live broadcasting  Set up your own website  Use social networking

 Research on any two of these  Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and impact on society  Online shopping  Social networking  Web broadcasting  Online banking  Choose an organization or business as a case study

ADVANTAGES YouTube Partners own the copyrights & distribution rights to ALL of their own uploaded videos without exception. Becoming a partner puts your video at the VERY TOP of video searches. Content will be delivered to the largest worldwide online video community via YouTube and its syndication partners without any restrictions The user friendly software of YouTube allows you to create a name and edit various videos to your liking DISADVANTAGES There is no privacy anyone can see your videos There is no parental guidance so people can post things that are bad for viewers That it is easy for your music videos to be fraud or copyrighted

 Low Costs  Definitely, it's cheaper to use online social networking for both personal and business use because most of it is usually free.  You definitely can gain the customers' confidence if you can connect to them on both a personal and professional level.

 You are putting out information about your name, location, age, gender, and many other types of information that you may not want to let others know.  There is a potential for failure of security in both personal and business context.  Can be discouraging. It takes time to build your business through social networking.

you can buy just about everything for relatively cheap price ADVANTAGES safe and easy to use you can add photos of the things you are buying so you know the quality of the item descriptions of the items are generally good and describe the faults, if any DISADVANTAGES beware of people who exaggerate their descriptions. New should mean new and good condition should mean not many scratches and no broken bits. if an offer sounds too good to be true then it probably is an online auction and shopping website in which people and businesses buy and sell a broad variety of goods and services worldwide. Founded in 1995.online auctionwebsite

 Online shops give us the opportunity to pollution’ shopping.  Another thing which fascinates me is the cheap deals and better prices I get from online stores because products come to you direct from the manufacturer or seller  The choices you can get for products are amazing.  shop 24 x 7 and also reward us with a ‘no

 You are not allowed to check the item personally to see if it is described perfectly by the seller.  There is also a great possibility that you get scammed by fraud sellers who makes online stores for the purpose of stealing money from online consumers  Buying online is the risk the uncertain payment method online and the fear of being a victim of identity theft.
