Think…. In your notebook (or on a piece of paper) answer this question: What are the steps you use to solve a problem?

Solve this problem At your table solve this problem (if you are sitting alone find another person or join of table of 2) Groups of campers were going to an island. On the first day 10 went over and 2 came back. On the second day, 12 went over and 3 came back. If this pattern continues, how many would be on the island at the end of a week? How many would be left?

Problem Solving How did you solve the problem? Did your first approach work? Did working as a group help find a solution faster? Did the steps you used match the steps in your journal?

“Formal” Steps of Problem Solving 1.Understand the problem – Read or listen to the problem statement 2.Make a plan to solve the problem – Use pictures, charts, graphs, objects or act out the solution to help you devise a plan to solve the problem. – In Computer Science this is called an algorithm

“Formal” Steps of Problem Solving 3.Carry out the plan – Once the plan is conceived and understood, follow the plan. If your plan is good, this is the easy part. 4.Review and reflect on how the problem was solved.

Summary Problem Solving is very important for almost any job. The process to solve a problem is: 1.Understand the problem 2.Make a plan to solve the problem 3.Carry out the plan 4.Review and reflect on how the problem was solved

Rest of Today Turn in a paper with your group’s solution to the problem. Show the steps you took to solve it. Work on any missing work to better your grade.
