Found Poetry

Determining Criteria  There are six samples of found poems written by grade 9’s last year  Visit each poem, read it and record jot notes that describe it (1 min. per poem)  Revisit your favorite poem and make notes about why it is great

Determining Criteria 1. Share what you noticed about the poems in a class brainstorm 2. Share what you noticed about your favorite poem 3. Help create categories by grouping like items 4. Contribute to the development of a criteria rubric

Highlight  between words from the short story you read about your social justice topic  focus on words or phrases that describe experiences and feelings

Make a list  Use a piece of paper and a pen to record all of the words and phrases you highlighted

Check it Twice  Cross out non essential words (if, and, but, it, etc)  Cross out anything that is dull  Cross out anything that doesn’t relate to your topic  Cross out anything that doesn’t fit with the overall tone  When you finish, you should have a list half as long as your original

Create it  Decide how to put your remaining words and phrases in order  You can change punctuation or little changes to the words to make them fit better (change tense, plurals, capitals, etc)  Add words if you need to

Read & Revise  Read over your draft and check the criteria  What changes need to be made to meet all of the criteria for a great found poem?  Make changes

Add Creative Detail  Create a title for your poem  Is there something you want to do with the poem’s physical shape?  Is there something that needs more emphasis and should be repeated?  Is there something you want to do with the punctuation?

Have a friend Read & Revise  Have a friend read over your draft and check the criteria  What changes need to be made to meet all of the criteria for a great found poem?  Get suggestions from your friend on how to improve your poem

Make a Final Draft  Type your final draft (make deliberate font choices)  Make sure your assignment is formatted properly for submission  Proof read your typing  Double check that your poem meets the criteria  Prepare all of your pre-writing work and drafts. Staple them together. Keep your final typed draft separate, but be prepared to hand all of this in on Weds. April 20 th
