Don’t ya know? He’s the king of the goths yo!

 His life mirrored his work (which is pretty freaky if you ask me!)  Themes of madness, untimely death, obsession.  Many critics say it’s a reflection of his own life (and FYI – many great writers struggle with ‘issues’)  Video on Poe’s life.Poe’s life

SettingCharactersPlot

 Unity of effect: every element, plot, character, setting & imagery help to create a single mood.  Know the devices on your worksheet  Rhyme, Repetition, alliteration, onomatopoeia  What is a stanza?  Bid me to weep, and I will weep  While I have eyes to see;  And having none, and yet I will keep  A heart to weep for thee.  A B A B

 True wit is nature to advantage dress'd;  What oft was thought, but ne'er so well express'd.  (This is A/A)  Poe uses INTERNAL rhyme when there is a rhyme occurring within a single line of a poem, not at the end of the lines.  Allegory, not the Raven, but Masque of Red Death. DEF: characters & objects stand for ideas like good & evil. Modern can be concepts. Can be words or art – represent a place/situation, etc. Meaning lies OUTSIDE the text. So basically, the story w/the character represents something REAL.  The movie Avatar is an allegory.  My favorite version of this: James Earl Jones along with: Beethoven’s Moonlight SonataJames Earl JonesMoonlight Sonata

 When & where do events take place?  What is the raven’s response to all of the speaker’s questions?  What is the speaker’s explanation of the raven’s one response?  See additional questions…

 Suppose the raven, instead of saying “Nevermore”, has an extensive human vocabulary. How would the raven explain his actions? What reason would he give for entering the speaker’s house and for repeating, “Nevermore”? What would the raven say about who he is?  Write the raven’s explanation in a genre of your choosing – monologue, print interview, diary entry, or a letter. Be insightful and entertaining!!!
