DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Cells How Cells Work Reproduction

Reproduction – The Big Ideas Cells reproduce by dividing. One cell can become many cells as each cell continues to divide. The nucleus divides first, then the rest of the cell, in cells with nuclei. Living tissue grows as millions of cells divide and make more cells.

Reproduction – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of plants prior to this study. It will help for students to use the Fun- damental, Seeing Cells. It will also help if they can:Seeing Cells – Explain that all living things are made up of cells. – Name the parts of a cell. – Explain the functions of the parts of a cell.

Reproduction – Common Misconceptions All cells in the body are constantly reproduced, even as we age. Reality: Some cells are frequently replaced. Others rarely reproduce. Hair and skin cells are examples of cells that reproduce often. Brain and nerve cells are rarely reproduced after a person is just a few months old.

Reproduction – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Reproduction. Reading Passage: How Do Living Things Grow? How Do Living Things Grow? eBooks: Why Does Your Hair Grow? Why Does Your Hair Grow? Video Segment: Asexual ReproductionAsexual Reproduction Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Reproduction – Instructional Ideas Watch the video segment, Skin Cells.Skin Cells –Have students write a letter to a friend who is going to the beach for a weekend. –Ask students to use information from the segment to tell their friend why they should protect their skin from the sun while they are outside. Guide students through the Exploration, Reproduction.Reproduction –This will allow them to get a first-hand look at cell reproduction.

Reproduction – Instructional Activities Ask students to write a short paragraph explaining why they believe their hair grows. –Share these paragraphs. –Then, have students read the passage, Why Does Your Hair Grow. Why Does Your Hair Grow –Ask students to revise or rewrite their paragraphs if their original responses were inaccurate.

State Standards: If you wish to review your state standards regarding Reproduction, click here to get to the curriculum standards search feature of DES.
