COMMUNISM Goal = create a utopia where everyone is equal -everything (all wealth) is shared Gov’t. has full power to ensure all are equal -controls wages, living conditions, # & type of personal possessions

THE USA & COMMUNISM Scared USA and western Europe -market economy benefits INDIVIDUALS (no sharing) -wanted to stop communism from spreading

KOREAN WAR Divided in ½ after WWII -north became communist (backed by USSR and China) -south became democratic (backed by USA) North invaded south -USA sent troops to help U.S. forces pushed N. Korea out -cease fire called; war not officially over

VIETNAM France lost control of Northern Vietnam to communists after WWII -France maintained control of S. Vietnam ($) Northern Vietnam then waged war on S. Vietnam French left in UN divided it into N. Vietnam and S. Vietnam

VIETNAM WAR USA took France’s place -to prevent the spread of Communism -no victory; withdrew in communist North took over N. & S. Vietnam reunited -a single communist nation -many S. Vietnamese fled to other Asian countries & USA

N. KOREA TODAY Ruled by Kim Jong Il -ruthless dictator -schools teach he is heavenly Very Poor Country -all $ spent on military -sanctions placed on it by U.N. Threatens to use nuclear weapons whenever threatened
