Warm-up Review of Sample free- response from A.P. Statistics A scatterplot demonstrates the positive correlation between the number of churches and the number liquor stores in a growing town over the years. 1)The correlation appears to be a strong. Explain why even though there appears to be a strong correlation, why the two variables are not related. 2) Another scatterplot demonstrates a strong correlation between the number of people wearing shorts and the number of people eating ice cream on different days at the beach. What is the lurking variable?

Free Response Rubric grading translation The student… Of the overall mathematics being addressed, the student demonstrates a: Explanations are required, the student : If calculations/ algebra or formulas are required If graphs, tables, or diagrams are required, the student’s work: Degree of precision/attention to detail Mastered 4 (A) exceeds expectati ons Perfect Strong level of understanding  Knowledge is clearly shown off  Gets the big idea Answers clearly Explanation withwork Uses correctly spelled technical language All steps are shown No mistakes Graphs have titles and labels, a uniform scale for intervals Acceptable 3 (B) meets expectati ons … minor error(s) Good/Proficient level of understanding  Knowledge is shown off  Occasional small mistakes related to calculation not understanding of material  Gets the big idea Answers clearly Explanation with work Uses technical language, perhaps Misspelled All steps are shown A possible minor mistake. Graphs have titles, labels, a uniform scale for intervals. A possible minor mistake but, multiple is not acceptable for a 3.  Good degree of accuracy/attention to detail  Possible rounding mistakes are minor 2 (C) approach ing expectati ons …has some tools, but no direction or …has some direction but no tools Growing level of understanding  Knowledge is partly shown off  Excessive small mistakes AND/OR minor conceptual misunderstandings  Demonstrates understanding of some concepts but not others Gives partial explanations Has responses that are less than clear Possible minor errors in calculations or incorrect use of term or fomula Graph is lacking in conveying data adequately.  Average degree of accuracy/attention to detail  Possible mistakes due to lack of storing variables Misses the point 1 (D) – meets few expectati ons …has a basic step in the right direction “has a pulse” Weak level of understanding  Knowledge is poorly shown off  Many conceptual misunderstandings Gives minimal or confusing explanations Weakly represents information Is labeled poorly or confusingly Indentifies no units Is scaled incorrectly  Poor degree of accuracy/attention to detail  Major rounding mistakes 0 (F) – does not meet expectati ons …has nothing worthwhile “flat-lining” No level of understanding  No knowledge shown off  Major conceptual misunderstandings Gives no explanations Shows little to no work Conveys little to no information Identifies no units Contains no labels, titles, scale, etc  No degree of accuracy/attention to detail

Comparing a 4pt and 3pt response The packet includes the scoring rubric for a particular free response problem on the 2011 A.P. Exam. Examine both carefully. The first response got full credit (4pts) The second response got 3 pts. Read both and write down reason(s) the second response lost a point.

Quiz Directions Use the word bank at the top #1- 8. You will not use all words or repeat them. You need graph paper or paper for the back side of the quiz. Answer the anything with Describe or Interpret in sentences. Explain completely if it says explain. Same if it asks why. Be sure to label the scatter plot correctly. When you finish turn in your quiz, and read 3.4. Next block we will complete an activity reviewing scatter plots. When creating scatter plots for FORM A use the women’s height as the explanatory variable. Form B use fat content as the explanatory variable.
