Hewitt Anderson’s Great Big Life Week 18 Day 4

Read Aloud: Listening Comprehension We have been reading a short biography of Janet Evans, a great American swimmer and Olympic athlete. Remember that biography text: tells the story of a person’s life and accomplishments. is written by a person other than the subject. What was noteworthy about Janet Evans in the biography “Janet Evans: Dangerous When Wet”?

Discussion Name one way fairy tales and fables are important.

Comprehension: Narrative Forms of Literature A fable is a very short story that states a moral at the end. Folktales contain simple characters whose actions reveal basic truths. In folktales, events often happen in threes. Fairy tales are highly imaginative stories that may contain fanciful imaginary creatures. Most fairy tales have a happy ending. A myth is a story that contains gods and goddesses whom ancient cultures believed in. Many myths explain the origins of things. A tall tale is a humorous story featuring a larger-than-life main character. Tall tales are structured in episodes, like TV shows. A pourquoi tale is a traditional story that tells how something in the natural world came to be.

Guided Practice: Transparency R69 Let’s play “Name That Tale”. As I read aloud each question you will look on the slides to identify each literary form.

Something that is vast is so wide it would be hard to get across it. Did any of your ancestors travel a vast distance in their lives?

Someone who is relentless in trying to do something keeps at it and refuses to give up. Name an event you participated in where the noise level was relentless.

If you roused someone, you woke up or alerted that person. What brilliant object outside your window might rouse you at night?

A resourceful person is good at finding ways to solve problems. Would you rather be graceful or resourceful? Why?

Intentions are ideas about what a person means to do. What might a child wit mischievous intentions do?

If you do something inadvertently, you do it without meaning to. Is it possible to inadvertently do something mischievous? Why?
