Universities have to support the Knowledge Society and the Knowledge Economy Universities have to develop a new mission: the University Third Mission (3M) o Teaching: not only to young people, not only academic knowledge o Research: not only basic research o Responding to the socio-economic environment in partnerships with business and community

Universities need deeper links with community and business for: Making the educational system more effective by a continuous adaptation to the changing needs of the society and the economy: Curricula development, better competencies Work placements, direct job training Use of updated technology Making research more effective, efficient and oriented to the needs of the Knowledge Society Running universities in a more efficient way with the cooperation of stakeholders avoiding isolation Last, but not least, obtaining additional resources 6
