The GIS Department within the NIS was and is still used for conducting internal analyses, useful to the NIS, but also in developing cartograms for the publications of the NIS or of the Territorial Statistical Units. NIS has endowed 3 ArcView 3.x desktop licenses, 1 ArcGIS 9. desktop license, 1 PC/ArcInfo 3.5 desktop license and, due to the census contract, 1 Geomedia Professional web license and 2 Geomedia Professional desktop licenses. Software in use Only the ESRI products are used and, for various census issues, the Intergraph products.

The GIS Department exists in the NIS since1997. Organisation of GIS Initially, it was included in the Direction of demographic statistics and population censuses. Since 2001 it was taken over by the General direction of agriculture and environment statistics. Between 2004 and 2007 it was part of the General direction for coordination of the national statistical system. Since 2007, it has been functioning under the Direction of statistical information dissemination and public relations.

At first, the GIS Department counted 7 persons. Organisation of GIS After two years (1999), only 5 remain; since 2001 the Department is composed of 3 persons; two years later, the services are assured by 2 persons; presently (since 2005), in this Department works only one person. The actual governmental policy (the job blocking in the public system) on one hand and the small wages on the other hand, make it impossible for the number of employees in this department to increase, at least in the near future.

The digital databases in the possession of the NIS are composed of: Availability of basis geostatistical units Administrative boundaries at country level Administrative boundaries at macro-regions Administrative boundaries at regions one coverage for each of the 42 counties Administrative boundaries for communal territories (3186 units) Railroad network Roads Hydrography – the main rivers

These are also the statistical information dissemination levels. After introducing the population census questionnaires, we will also have households and buildings with geographical references. The statistical information dissemination policy in the form of maps does not imply any financial involvement. But the dissemination in this form is made only as an “image”, not as a vector.
