2 Hudtloff Hurricane students have the responsibility to arrive on time and prepared to Mrs. Jackson’s class. 8:15 a.m. –8:25 a.m. You have many choices to make, take advantage of this time. If you were previously absent or will be going on vacation or leaving for early dismissal, go to the attendance office and receive the appropriate slips to attend classes. Read the whiteboard (outside classroom door) to arrive prepared. Use this time to also go to locker and put away your coats, backpacks, meet and greet your friends, go to the library, take care of business with Mrs. Thomas, etc. This does not mean to loiter (hang around) outside the classroom door/hallway. 8:25 a.m. – 8:30 a.m. You have the opportunity to prepare for today’s learning – sharpen pencils, access paper/writing tools, have your reading selections/articles handy, get started on unfinished homework, etc. Read/write daily/weekly agenda assignments; and most importantly, read what is posted on the overhead projector/document camera.

4 Food, Beverages, Etc. Water is the only type of beverage allowed in the classroom (there is a water fountain in the classroom). As per HMS rules, gum is not allowed.

5 Assigned Classroom Seating While we are adjusting to our new schedule of arrival and preparedness, I will implement assigned classroom seating for students. Your ability to positively manage your behavior, avoid disrupting other students learning, and/or classroom teacher will determine your ability to opt for student choice in seating arrangements.

6 Restroom Privileges during Core Periods You may access the restroom after the first 30 minutes of core class, but not 30 minutes before departing for the day. In order to access your restroom privilege, fill out YOUR agenda.

7 Student System/Academic Files Each student has a student filing system in the classroom. Each student has a “While I Was Gone…” file. A team of students have volunteered to take attendance and put within this file any handouts distributed for the day, or student work returned. These files will also contain your “practices” of reading and writing growth evidence for your annual student portfolio and goal setting folder. Any extra paper, pencils/pens, copies of your reading selections/articles, or any materials that you wish to maintain in the classroom, may be placed in these files as space permits.

9 Classroom Textbooks and Required Materials Elements of Literature textbook - classroom set Write Source textbook - classroom set Literary Text – novels/reading articles/selections are to be brought to class every school day. A student selected novel is encouraged to be brought into the classroom. Reading/Writing Journals – A Spiral Notebook for Reading/Writing is required for students to take daily notes. This journal will reflect entries focused upon the elements of fiction (setting, plot, theme and character(s)); in addition to showing student practice with brainstorming and prewriting when responding to writing prompts, thinking routines, reflection, sketching, etc. Social Studies textbook – issued to student Varied writing tools (red/purple/green pens for assessing), highlighters, and several #2 pencils. Lined Paper – Three-hole lined paper

10 Classroom Assignments Students submitting any assignment are expected to post the proper heading on each assignment. Example of Proper Heading (see the whiteboard) Assignments submitted on paper with torn edges/holes will not be accepted. Please pay attention to home learning and assignment due dates; the HMS Homework Policy will be in effect. If you are absent, you are not exempt from assignments, please be sure to submit them accordingly (look in your agenda).

11 How to Determine What You Have Missed Review the daily/weekly agenda. Check your “While I Was Gone…” file Look over the wooden shelf (beside the bookshelf), for extra handouts, if any. Ask a scholar - peer/classmate. Review Classroom Agenda. Check the Daily Learning Binder (located next to the wooden shelf-This is our back up to the back ups.) Ask Mrs. Jackson (only after you have practiced the above).
