The Radical Republican’s Reconstruction Plan

A New Reconstruction Plan In 1867, Radical Republicans started their reconstruction Act. They outlawed the old state government except for Tennessee had to ratify the 14 th amendment. They also declared that nobody had served in the Confederate army could vote state constitutions.

Their Hopes Radical republicans had hoped for more, they wanted to divide up the plantations into small farms for both black and white southerners. They also wanted to build schools that were integrated for all children in the south. Although these ideas were rejected by full congress.

Grant Elected The Radical Republicans then registered over 735,000 African Americans many of which were former slaves. This helped Grant win the election. This was very good because Grant fully supported the Radical Republican Reconstruction method. So they learned that African Americans Could be a big help in the elections.
