Welcome to our Maths Evening

What does calculation mean?....a mathematical determination of the amount or number of something. Manipulating numbers to find a result …… the missing number in a number sentence ……..the solution to a word problem

Four basic operations Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division

+ - add and plus total altogether more than subtract take away minus less than Link to sub….

x ÷ groups of sets of lots of times multiply Link to multi…. share divide

Addition Combining two groups – objects (practical and pictorial) Counting on – (5 more than 13) Use marked number lines Simple recording of number sentences = 18 Solving number sentences ( ) ( ) Use a greater variety of apparatus - numicon, tens and ones, number lines, 100 square Written method – own number line or number sentence.

Addition Strategies What can we look out for to help us? How can we tackle the calculation? Horizontal and any order 2+3 = = 5 Larger number first = = 17 Number bonds to = = 15 Doubles = = 12+8=20 Near doubles 5+4 = = 9 Partitioning = = 25 * Adding to nearest = = 23 * Adjusting 13+9 = = = = 24 *

Early addition How many grey rabbits are there? How many white rabbits are there? How many rabbits are there altogether?

Next steps Add these numbers: 5 and 6 and 2 What is 53 add ten? Write the total =

Moving on Write the answer = Tick the two numbers which total 50. Write the total = Write the answer =

Subtraction Taking away – objects (practical and pictorial) Counting back – (5 less than 18) Use marked number lines Simple recording of number sentences 18 – 5 = 13 Solving number sentences (38 – 24) * Use a greater variety of apparatus - numicon, tens and ones, own number line, 100 square Written method (42 – 25) Finding the difference by counting on *

Early subtraction There are six toys in a box. I take away three toys. How many toys are left?

Next steps 15 ducks are on the pond. 11 of them go away. How many are left? Find the answer 72 – 8 Buy 2 different comics and spend 16p Tick the 2 comics.

Moving on Write the number that is 11 less than 40. Work out the difference between 46 and 18. What is twenty seven subtract nine. Put a number in the box to make this correct = 11

Multiplication 3 faces. How many eyes? Draw pictures Repeated addition = 6 Use strategy to solve addition – number line, apparatus etc 3 groups of 2 = 6 (sets of/ lots of) 3 x 2 = ? Draw an array * Jump on a number line. * (marked or own)

Early multiplication Count these pairs of socks. How many pairs are there? How many socks are there altogether?

Next steps Add these three numbers: five and five and five. There are 10 crayons in each box. How many crayons are there altogether?

Moving on Match each addition to a multiplication. 5 x x x x 3 4 x 5

Division Practical sharing (12 sweets between 3 children) Draw pictures * (sweets and children) Share into groups * (How many groups of 3?) Repeated subtraction * (Number line jumping) Known fact - ( inverse of multiplication)

Early division Share these pencils equally between Peter and Ben. How many pencils will each of them get?

Next steps Four children share these shells. They each get the same number of shells. How many shells does each child get?

Moving on 20 children sit at table in groups of 4. How many groups will there be? Desi sells 18 balloons. The shop sells balloons in packs of 5. How many packs does he need to buy? There are 20 eggs. A box holds 6 eggs. How many boxes are needed to hold all the eggs?

Number crunching or applying your knowledge? …… finding the missing number in a number sentence …..solving a word problem

The missing number The many ways we need to understand a concept = 3 + = = 9 9 = = + 6 = 3 + 6

= is the same as = = 16 + ? ? + 28 = x 5 = - 25

The word problem Two step There are 24 marbles in the bag. 12 are blue, 5 are yellow and the rest are red. How many marbles are red? One step On the double decker bus there are 6 people on the bottom deck and 8 people on the top deck. How many people are on the bus?
